How to find volunteer work...

Hey everyone. I'm in the Navy stationed in Great Lakes IL waiting for my next school to start and i'm literally doing NOTHING and getting paid for it which was cool for a little bit but i'm starting to go crazy. I've got 3 moths to figure out what to do with. i've looked online a little bit but it's mostly just people with businesses that don't want to pay anyone which i wouldn't mind helping but i'd rather "give back to the community" somehow. anyone have any ideas, connections in the Chicago area, experience or insite on where i can get started? thanks in advance!

Why don't you come out to the meet on thursday night. There is a bunch of navy guys that come out and you can meet a bunch of car people out here in chicago.

Which ever town you want to work in, you can go to the town center and they will help you out. I went to a Christian university for a while so volunteer work was mandatory(Doesn't seem like volunteer work does it?). Out of everything I did, my favorite thing was helping out with after school sports with elementary school kids. It was so much fun, and they have you laughing so hard. I plan on assistant coaching little league sometime in the future.

Museums/state parks and local railroads usually look for volunteers

They are letting you sit around for 3 months with nothing to do?! Why just just let you take leave for the time being. . Silly Navy. The Marine's would have never of let this happen ;)

I am sure you can go and help out the USO.

where are the meets at??? i'd so be down! porn is a possibility. i just went up my chain of command and got some info on a navy run homeless shelter that i can work at over from 1600-0700 whenever i want. and here's just a little fun fact, there are 24,500 Navy personel that are "on hold" or awaiting orders and 15,000 of them have been this status for over 6 months....do the math....

Like I said. . the Marine's don't let you just "sit around". I was just poking fun. Inter branch joking is something you will become very familar with. Did you just get out of boot? (im being serious, not making a joke)

o no offence was taken don't worry. i've been in the navy going on 7 months now. i've completed a bout 4 months of school already but my next "phase" is expected to start around march. last night i actually helped with this homeless shelter program. i went from 1600 yesterday and JUST got back. it was SO much more fun than shinning boots and ironing uniforms. feeding kids who were brought out of the rain by the police and handing out cloths and setting up beds cooking food....**** like that actually makes me feel like i'm doing something with my time.
