235 on a 9" isn't going to look super stretched. 225's at the largest, you can go as narrow as a 205. I think a 215 would give you the look you're trying to achieve.

235 would look pretty stretched, normal size tire for a 9" in 275 285.

Im running a 225 on my 9.5's and it doesnt look very stretched at all.
its stretched, slightly.. but nowhere near like in the OP's pic. A 235 on a 9" is not much of a stretch.

I run 225-40-18's on my 18x9.5's and the stretch isn't too aggressive, it's about two sizes undersized. Straight sidewalls on a 9 would be a 225 depending on the brand of tire. If you want a really aggressive stretch like on that Subaru you'd need to go about 3-4 sizes smaller than straight which would put you in the 195-185 territory.
You also need to look at the side wall profile on the tire you're buying because that has a huge effect on how the stretch will look. My wheels for reference:

Haha either tires vary or opinions vary, or both.
I had 235/40/17 S-03s on my 17x8.5 RPF-1s and they were slightly undersized if you ask me... just a very slight taper but definitely not straight. Not too far off from thefro's. I think a shorter sidewall sits more square on a wheel though so the stretch is less noticeable on a 18 vs. a 17 because of that. I now run 245/40/17 Hankook RS-2s and they look straight to me, pretty meaty. I'd definitely think that depending on the tire, a 235 would have a slight stretch (and I mean slight, maybe some people only consider it a stretch when its not too moderate?), and 225 would have a noticeable stretch... 215 would be upping the ante, but I understand and accept thats what some people are looking to do. If this is for a DSM though, I really can't picture it to be honest. Guess I'll have a chance to soon enough on yours...

205 or 215 will give a nice stretch on a 9. if you want 225 or 235 with a nice stretch you will need a wider wheel

245 on a 9 is square for the most part, 275 has a little bulge, if you want a safe stretch I say 215, done go crazy on the stretch.
Thats a 215 40 on a 9
