My turbo... is dead. - Small 16g

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvS4HEff0mc

Go figure. Just after I turn the boost up after installing a new coil pack. I was flowing at least 30lb/min. EvoScan was estimating 37lb/min but I think that was a bit high at 20-21psi.

I may not make the Sonic meet if it still happens tomorrow.

I did a pull pushing 20-21psi. It felt great. I let off the gas and a huge cloud of smoke filled my rearview mirror. Enough oil got shot into the exhaust that the LC-1 kicked a o2 sensor malfunction error.

Kip mentioned he might have a 14b to use, but it's still on his car. He's wanting to put that tdo4 on his car, but he needs to buy a t3 manifold and weld up a new downpipe before that can happen.
Tyler mentioned using his T25 once it comes off his car. LOL The evoIII16g that's going to replace it has been sitting in his basement for quite a while now.

I think I caught it before the wheels hit the housing, so it should be rebuildable. I won't know until I tear it apart.

If I were going to put a $300 turbo on my car, I'd spring an extra $100 and install a HX35 w/ .55AR bolt on housing. It would easily flow all I want from it, plus the large compressor cover gives bonus points in the visual department.

The turbo doesn't look like it was damaged other than the shaft play. It's rebuildable. I'm actually sending it to a good friend on Monday. I can ride the bus or take my bike to class and work.

Ain't nothing wrong with a Holset. My brother is running an HX35 on his Talon.

That's the plan for this summer. I just don't have the time or money to move to the Holset right now. The rebuild will suffice until mid summer.

I'm sorry to hear about your car I have a mint 14b I was going to use on a car in the next week but if you were in a bind for a turbo I'd just sell it to you for $100 and pick one up when i get the motor in the car.

I have a 14b I picked up a while back but then I got a rebuilt 14b for next to nothing so I don't need the other one... i'm sure it needs rebuilt but as far as I can tell it has no shaft play... PM me i'll give you a good deal on it or if you have something maybe we could trade.

The turbo is shot. I pulled it off the car Saturday afternoon. The wheels lightly kissed the housings but it should be rebuildable. I'm sending it out to be rebuilt today once the post office opens. I hope to have it back and on the car by next Sunday for the Sonic rain date.

I'm now pretty much set on getting an HX35 w/ BEP .55AR bolt on housing once the semester is over and I'm working a steady summer job. That should be the last turbo I will ever need for this car. I just want this car to run some mid 12s in the 1/4 mile.

It was able to chirp the tires from a 20mph roll though through the automatic transmission and 245 summer tires. I never got a chance to try launching it from a stop.

Straight from the rebuilder.

Wow man, you didn't just kill this thing... you raped and murdered it!

Extensive damage to the turbine shaft, the internals are all wiped out. If I install a parts kit I can have it back up and running for you for around $--- including shipping....

I'll send you all of the parts I replace so you can inspect them....definitely appears to have died from lack of oil, which is nuts considering the head normally gives exactly the right amount of oil for a MHI turbo. Has your head ever been shaved?

~Jus
Looks like I'll have some carnage photos to post up once I get it back.

The head has never been shaved but I did put a new head gasket on about a month ago. Put about 1k miles on it since then. This turbo went on the car last August and had about 15k put on it since then (yeah... 15,000 miles since August!) I need to check the oil feed for blockage, but I'll probably just feed it from the oil filter housing with a small restrictor instead of the head.
