School me on circular polarizers...

Thinking about getting one... I'd like to know the following things...

1- Will it help remove some glare from headlights on night shots? (if not what would - if anything)
2- I have a nikon D70 with a 28-70mm and a 70-210mm lens and wil be buying a 50mm shortly - What size polarizer(s) do I need?
3- How much should I spend ? new/used

i just got one a few days ago (a cheap P.O.S. from bestbuy lol 20$ ) but thats all i can afford right now. and even though its a POS i still notice a decent difference in my shots. if your not a pro then i dont see what would be wrong with spending 20 bucks vs the 80 bucks a good one would cost. make sure you learn how to use it right though, or there will be no difference at all. (theres alot more to just screwing it on)

check on your lense, it should say what mm is its, my canon lense was a 58mm. (the size of the polarizer you need is based of the size of your lense (not the zoom) but on the front of your lense you should see a little sign (greek letter phi haha) with the actual size.) and theres always adapters out there...

and i would not use it on night shots.. it wont do too much besides make you have a longer shutter, which makes it more of a pain... but in sunlight, it has an amazing effect of reducing reflcetions, and makes the colors look SOOOOOOOOOOOO much better...

im not a pro, but i would just go get a 20$ one, and theres only one way to find out if it will actually make a difference at night, try it...

A lot of people say don't put cheap glass in front of expensive glass, and for that reason I tend to buy top dollar CP's and UV/Protective filters. You can spend $20 - $220 depending.

I use B+W Kaesemann CPs in 77 and 82mm, both slim. They're not cheap, but they look great.

Get a cheap Tiffen or Hoya CP in 52mm for your 50mm and see if you use it. You'll lose contrast compared to a B+W or something, and it'll be more flare prone, but don't just blow money right away when you can try it out for $18 or something.

Since all of your lenses have different diameter filter threads you can either get all different sized CPs (expensive) or a big one and step-up rings (kind of clumsy.)

Whatever you do, realize you won't be using a CPL under a lens hood. So step up rings (quality ones) aren't that big of a deal
