What is wrong with my VW???

I love my Jetta and plan to keep it running for as long as possible, it's got 170k on it, 2nd clutch & trans.

However I hopped in it this morning to head to work, put the defrosters on and then heat b/c it was chilly, and my car blew a **** ton of smoke from the vents. I had to drive with my windows down just to breathe, needless to say i froze on the way to work, but no matter what i did the POS blew smoke! even if the heat/air was off smoke still came out. this weekend i added coolant & my temp gauge is not saying its overheating...

Help me what is wrong with my car?

Does the smoke have a sweet smell too it? It could be a heater core leakage issue. Check the pass floor for wet/dampness.

I didn't really notice the smell to me just made it stuffy very difficult to breathe, and as far as i know it isn't leaking any fluids inside the car...a heater cooler, is that hard/expensive to fix?

sounds like the heater core is done for. Not sure about the mk3s, but for corrados you have to take the dash out to get to it.
you can remove the two hoses from the firewall that go into the interior and route them together using hose clamps and a copper tube to bypass it for the summer.
