Ford unveils world's first disposable car

Today at the New York Auto Show, Ford announced its plans to build the Basura, the world's first disposable car.
The Basura is a four-seat city car designed for a single year's use. The Basura's body is made of a newly developed cardboard/balsa wood composite; it has the same tensile strength as aluminum but can be recycled like ordinary paper, and is finished using recycled paint. The 1-liter three-cylinder engine uses a thin-wall aluminum block with disposable nickel/tin alloy cylinder liners. It connects to a six-speed twin clutch automatic transmission with gears made from recycled plastic. The car has a design life of just 18 months or 20,000 miles.
Ford plans to offer the Basura on a one-year, 15,000 mile closed-end lease for $89 per month. At the end of the lease the body, frame, wiring and transmission internals will be shredded and recycled while the engine block and transmission casing will be re-used in a new Basura. Ford says that 99.5% of the Basura is recyclable.
"We think Americans will embrace the concept of a disposable car," said Ford spokesman Henry Edsel. "Designing a vehicle with intentionally limited durability brings the materials and engineering costs way, way down, while the cardboard-balsa body allows us to change the styling quickly and cheaply. Thanks to Basura, buyers who would otherwise be limited to a used car will be able to drive a new car with cutting edge styling, year after year."
The Ford Basura is scheduled to go on sale on April 1, 2011, as a 2012 model. General Motors, Nissan, and Subaru have confirmed that they are developing their own disposable cars, all of which will be available to the public in the same time frame. -- Aaron Gold
