Engine assembly lube

Looking for input from experienced engine builders on what they use. Clevite, redline, crc, other?

good attitude, thanks again for contributing to the forum by making the effort to post in the right section.

as for your question... they're all designed to do the same thing, and they all do the job just fine. no reason to get too particular about that when i'm sure there are more important things to worry about.

I use redline if the motor is going to be started right away, or if i'm shipping it somewhere or i know it won't be started for a couple weeks i use techline. Depending on where you are i can give you some if you need it. I have cases of the stuff.

I've heard that LUCAS oil stabilizer is fantastic as an assembly lube.
Just my $0.02 though since I've never built a motor

I did alot of research when I was getting ready to build my motor on this subject. Most will get the job done but some serve for different scenerios. For example, If the motor will be sitting assembled for a while or tossed in after assembly. Just like oil, the weights are different and use different compounds. In my situation, I knew my motor was going to sit for a week or 2 while I picked up some loose ends so I opted for Lucus engine assembly lube. Its very thick and tacky so it wont run off if sitting for a period of time. I read a bunch of good stuff on the Clevite bearing guard but the stuff was hard to find.

I know your not an idiot and may already know this but don't use synthetic oil during the break in period...

Hope this helps.

That is true of old school motors. Newer stuff it doesn't really matter. Hell, cars come out of the factory with synthetic in them for years now.

I agree with adding the Lucas or a similiar product if it is gonig to sit. The thickness of it will help the parts stay lubed.

depending on how soon a motor will be run makes or breaks what we use.

Normally we use Permatex engine assym lube. Its a thick blood red "oil" that is sticky and clings to everything. We use this stuff when just tossing cams in or slapping heads on. If we are doing a full bottom end up build we use Lubrimatic engine assym paste.

x3

Pictures for reference -

I picked it up at my local AutoZone. Used it on the threading of my ARP head studs.

I used the lubriplate when I just assembled my bottom end and cams. The machinist I dealt with after said the lubriplate doesn't break as well as some of the other mentioned above.

Sorry that was rather negative of me.

After spending 5k on a motor one of the most important things to me is the motor having proper lubrication on that first turn of the key, didn't really trust picking up the first thing I see.

Anyway it will be sitting for a few months still I just wanted to get it together.

No worries, my apologies as well and I hope we're cool all around.
This has turned out to be a really informative thread and I'm glad that people with experience chimed in on it. I wouldn't be surprised if its something I reference sometime down the road myself .
