I've never bought a rifle, only a handgun. But all they did for me at a local gun barn, was a backround check and you have to fill out a bunch of paper work. Its pretty simple, they should show you how to take the gun apart clean it and all that good stuff.

go and talk to someone at a reputable gun shop in their area... they will point you in the right direction. rent some, spend an hour shooting... see what you like, go from there.

just remember that if you plan to carry all the time and you go into different states, you need to apply to carry in each state.

No, there is no requirement for a license or permit in PA to own a gun. Only time either of them are required is if you plan to CONCEAL carry(state issued, but open carry is legal in PA), or if you want to own a fully automatic weapon(federally issued).

www.PAFOA.org has every possible bit of info you could ever want or need to know about guns in the state of Pennsylvania. I strongly suggest you go there, join, and read as much as you can to get up to speed before going into a gun shop. The more you know ahead of time, the less likely you are to get steered in the wrong direction. It really really helps to be an educated consumer. Think of PAFOA as the Carfax of the PA gun world... do tons of research before you even think about taking out your wallet and signing paperwork for a gun. After you've done your homework, check out as many guns in person as you can. Go into local shops and actually get some guns into your hands so you know exactly what you're looking for.

We're lucky here in PA... buying, selling, owning, carrying, and using guns is pretty easy and straight forward. There aren't too many ridiculous laws like there are in NY, NJ, CA, etc.

Oh BTW, if you go to a local gun shop...dont give them their full asking price, you can typically talk them down $50 or so. At least I did anyway lol

Tanners Sporting Goods has the best prices I've seen in the area, and they have a good used selection too.

Correct. And its incredibly simple, pass a background check, $25 cash or check, and they take your photo.
