First Digital Camera Recommendations (Well other than point and shoot)

Like the thread states. I plan on taking a digital photography course and am wondering what would be a good camera for a noob like myself to start off with. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Soo far Ive browsed thru Best Buy site to see what they have. $1,200 is my limit. Ive always loved the pics posted on here and appreciate a great photo so I figure why not take a course (my job pays for it anyways). The Nikon D5000 or Cannon XSI seem like the top rated ones on best buys site. Also any websites that I can read up on and learn in meantime before taking course would help.

everyone will probably disagree... but look at a panasonic fz-35.. i have the previous model, and it has all the adjustments and settings that an entry level dslr has, and it takes really nice HD video. i was going to buy a dslr, but by the time i learned how to take decent pictures and work the manual settings on the camera, it would already be dated.

I'm getting the Nikon D90 tommorow with a good discount. Just so happens my cousins wife is a manager at walmart in Oregon and they get 10% off and have no sales tax.

d90's are down to like $700, you should grab just the body and pick up some glass. like the 50 1.8 and 35 1.8 still would have some $ left over form ur budget

So it begins :-) Today I got:
D90 with 18-105 VR Kit
70-300mm VR Nikkor Lens
MBD80 Battery Grip
Extra Battery
Nikon Bag
B+W UV-Haze Filters
Lens Pen
Giotto Air Blower
**Plan on getting this weekend either 50mm f1.8 or 1.4 not sure which is better honestly (other than price). I'm loving the bokeh style pics. And taking some courses soon. So if anyone wan teach a noob during shoots or what not hit me up. I'd def come to get more experience.
