going from winged to wingless

wasent sure where to post this.... anyway

i have decided that i want to go wingless. im keeping my stock trunk and wing(because i like it and i wanna be able to put it back on if i need to). and ive been looking for a wingless trunk. i havent really seen any. plus my color java black pearl only came in 04 and its a rare color so its even harder to find one.

anyway i was thinking the next best thing to do is pick up a wrx trunk. take off the wing and have shop weld the holes shut. the trunk will have to be painted also

so my question is how much would it cost if a got a shop to do it? and what shops do that?

thanks
nick

I went wingless and had the holes filled / trunk repainted. It cost me ruffly $300. What I would recommend for you (if your cars black like in your avatar) is to just buy a carbon fiber trunk and leave it unpainted (make sure the CF trunk has no holes from manufacturer).

You'll end up buying a used trunk for $100 ish and having the holes filled and trunk repainted for $300 ish. You'll end up paying ruffly $400 to be stock.. (about what a CF trunk costs).

agreed
the cf trunk if you decide to sell will net you more money back then trying to sell another stock trunk.

FYI. I remember an article from a few years ago in SCC.

They had a STI that they swaped its trunk w/ wing for someones Impreza wingless trunk.

They just swapped without changing the release mechanisms.
The lighter trunk snapped open with violent force due to the reduced weight until they swapped that too. Just food for thought if you find a trade.

damn i didnt expect it to cost that much. and that 300 you guys talk about does that include the trunk being painted? or just the holes filled. im not really a fan of carbon fiber on black cars. for some reason it doesnt do much for me.

i was also thinking of going to a junk yard and finding a 2.5 rs but i know that they came with wrx wings also so its going to be a hit or miss.

Your best bet is to probably just swap with someone, and then if you want to go back to stock, swap again.

Either way good luck...it took me 2 years to find someone to swap trunk lids with, but I'm 100x happier with the way my car looks now (wingless).

Did the same thing on my EVO. Bought a regular lancer trunk lid at junk yard, had it painted my color and that was that. Total cost was ~300 or 400. I swap the trunk with wing for track days, wing off for street. Much less attention that way. My friend with STI did the same thing as me a few years back.

CF trunks are ricy if they aren't painted. I personlally think the WRX spoiler looks good on the non-STi's Never was a fan of the STi or Evo spoilers though.

yea i think cf parts are kind of ricy it depends on the car and if it flows. but cf on a black car is horrible.

does anyone know how much roughly it would cost for a trunk from a junkyard??

If you're filling holes and want it to look good I'd definitely go somewhere that does really high quality work. If you cut corners on body work, it will show. A lot of times when shops fill holes they sink over time and you can see where the hole used to be.
If you're trying to keep it cheap I'd definitely just do the legwork and try to find a wingless in your color... but if you want it done sooner then hopefully you wont cut corners with who you have do it.
edit: I can no longer recommend LIP Collision after recently having a very disappointing experience with them.
