True story...

I was redoing the turbo setup on my car to get rid of a wacky volvo style turbo kit... I went out and got pretty much the same turbo just without a wastegate... .57AR if I remember correctly.

I decided not to cheap out on my car and I let the ebay turbo sit in the box and I got a brand new Turbonetics T3 .48AR turbo that was polished and beautiful. After a month of running it, my car started to smoke like I blew a piston ring... I swore up and down that it wasnt the turbo until one day I had the filter off and i had wall to wall shaft play. I tried to get turbonetics to exchange it, but they wouldnt. I was without the turbo for 4 weeks and I was given no compensation and I had to pay for shipping there. I got it back and had it on the car for 4 months then it blew again. This time turbonetics blamed it on my tune even tho it was the same problem.

In the mean time while the turbo was out for repair.. I ran the ebay turbo... after I recieved the turbonetics turbo back i sold it... to this day.. I am still running the ebay turbo with 0 problems and 0 shaft play.... its PERFECT...

i think it also has to do how much you're boosting the cars and what car it is. i know on DSMs, our engines are really harsh on turbos so the "chinachargers" do not work for long. Then, on Hondas they are good because they are not being pushed too hard.

Im running one that I upgraded the internals myself. I added the 360 thrust bearing and gapless oil seal. 8,000 miles and lots of boost.... So far still perfect!

I know of someone who used the 16g on a civic, running 15psi and 300 horse but blew the turbo after a week of driving. I found t/3 imitation turbo that looks decent I might give it a try.

Friend of mine ran one for 2 years @ 10 psi on a KA-T setup and drifted the piss out of it. It was still making like 300whp till the day the motor went (oil starvation). Rebuilding now and its gonna be run again

I think they are a hit or miss, everyone will have their own experience. I'd try one.

My buddy has a chinese 16g on a dsm. He has no line going to the wastegate actuator and is simply running all the boost the turbo can possibly put out. He has 880cc injectors and boost spikes to 36ish and holds around 28 till redline. Turbo is still fine and its been about a year.

I dont think its a question of them making power.... Its a question of reliability... Also its a question of them sending shards of metal down your intake pipe when the compressor shatters..

That being said.. mine is still ok... lol

A few things

Manifold
Downpipe
IC piping
ECU
Fuel
Tuning

More like a 4000-6000 investment in my case.

It's not about being an eBay turbo, it's about having the supporting mods for any kind of turbo upgrade but I won't get into that argument here, IM me.

Not a lot out there for my car power wise, what exists ain't cheap. Injectors are 500ish, ECU is 2000, manifold and downpipe are 700, tune is god knows what, IC piping is another 200ish, then for the turbo, and I'd really feel better running a Garret at that point.
