Decided to pick up a 27" iMac

So I managed to kill my 8 year old, undestructable PC the other day by attempting to upgrade it to Windows 7. Ironic? I've had this thing FOREVER and have never had problems with it and now it's dead. Oh well, time to upgrade. Ever since I saw the screen on the new iMacs, I wanted one. I gave it a try and am LOVING it!

So far my only gripes are the lack of USBs on the front (lack of clutter is nice though) and the fact I have to relearn how to use this thing.

you cant "kill" your computer by doing an OS upgrade.

You would think. During the upgrade from XP to 7, I got a message stating several files could not be copied over. Upon completion and restart, nothing happened...literally. I tried reformatting the PC using the original disc and again upon completion several files were missing. Could I have gotten it fixed, probably. But it wasn't worth the $100+ to repair it considering it was already 8+ years old.

Plus it justified a reason to get a new PC (or MAC in this case). ;)

Why would it cost money to repair it?
Normally when OS upgrades fail because of "missing files", it is likely that you had a heat problem from the get go that didn't manifest itself until you were doing something as processor intensive as an os upgrade.

Open the case and clean out all the dust in there with compressed air, and make sure all of your fans are working.

Congrats on the imac btw, I'm just trying to say that your pc is fixable and there is no reason to claim it as dead and not put it to some kind of use.

That's pretty cool. I too still use the PC I built in 2002. I can't bring myself to get rid of it because its the computer I built to travel with when I was playing Counterstrike competitively... Good memories... I been looking at a ThinkPad though, ill probably end up getting one eventually.

nice... sounds like you wanted a reason to upgrade, and an 8 year old computer as your main computer would probably definitely be struggling. i agree though, its not dead and could be put to use for something simple if you wanted to.
which processor and configuration did you go with for the imac and where did you get it? i'm looking at getting one as well but have been reading about some issues with the screen that i'm trying to wait on being resolved first.

I was definitely looking for a reason. That PC never gave me problems so I could never really justify a new one.

I ended up going with the cheaper of the 2 27" iMacs...3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. Ended up getting the last one at the Montgomeryville Best Buy. 18 months 0% financing is definitely nice although it'll be paid off much sooner.

I've read a couple reviews about what you're talking about but haven't seen any problems as of yet. Hopefully I won't down the line.

I too was an apple II (GS i think it was) veteran for our first compy.

I recently replaced my 8 year old computer as well. I ended up going with another PC (even though I'm a Mac guy at heart) simply because I could get significantly more computer for the money, and I had heard nothing but good things about windows 7. You really do pay for looks/name with Apple these days.

it was certainly implied

the iMac is a good computer. the screen is certainly beautiful. could have saved a lot of money though building a new desktop... but it would have taken up more space for sure.

speaking of cleaning, lagos, i need to open mine up and do that... i'm sure it's nasty inside

The irony I was implying was the fact that it never had issues and the moment I tried to upgrade it, it went kaput. Don't fix what's not broke I guess? LOL!

I hear ya on the saving money issue. I'm as far from the stereotypical "MAC" guy as them come. I liked the features the iMac offered and wanted to try something new.

you are, of course, absolutely correct. They are all personal computers.

the "mac" versus "pc" distinction...i guess that qualifies as "slang"?

11secdsm, no offense, but an 8 year old PC trying to run windows 7 even at the lowest, most basic settings, would have been a nightmare so I'm glad it broke or you would have gotten a bad impression of an excellent operating system.

No offense taken. As I stated, I have 7 on my 2 laptops and love it. I only attempted to load it on my desktop because I had a license available and wanted to use it.

It probably crashed on you from time to time, no?
Heat is what causes these types of issues. Most people don't realize that a computer is basically like a vac cleaner that sucks all kinds of dust in. After 8 years, there is probably a shocking amount of it in there restricting air flow.

These types of issues normally show up when you do a lot of processor intensive things like gaming or OS installs. This is why your original restore disk fails to install as well.
