Canon 5D Mark II Price Drop... ($200)

Canon has dropped the price on the Mark II by $200 as of 01/10/2010.. making it even more tempting to pickup another one.

Unfortunately the 5D classic that I picked up last week will probably drop a bit in value too.

i'm glad you posted this and i saw it since i just bought mine last monday new from best buy for the 2699 price since they offered 18 months no interest haha. i gave them a call and they'll do the price matching to the 2499 since its that price on their site too. guess they just paid for most of a new vertical grip for me lol

No problem.. My buddy works for Canon so he likes to tempt me whenever he gets wind of things dropping. He sent me an email about it the end of last week, but I didn't get it until I got in the office today.

I think I am going to stay put with the 5D classic for a bit..

Haha.. I barely have time to shoot one camera, I don't really need a second body.

There are just little creature comforts that I got used to with the 5DII that the 5D lacks. That being said, I don't miss the HD space being quickly eaten up.

Other than the dedicated AF button, there's not a big difference in ergonomics between the two.

Ergonomics are slightly different, but (among other things) I miss the information in the viewfinder (ISO included with everything, not by itself), getting lazy and using liveview to do frame the initial shot, the larger better resolution screen, video (which I had some fun with), etc. This doesn't include the performance advantages.

Is it worth the extra $1200-1500? I'm holding out and might pickup a few primes to tide me over (135 F/2L and something lower)

Invest in the lenses.

I own both and most of the times, I just grab one of the cameras out of the bag since I can't tell the difference between the two bodies when they're on their side. Under normal shooting conditions, there's little image quality difference between the two.

The only time I look to make sure I grab the MKII is when I know I'll be using higher ISO or if I'm shooting outdoors most of the day in the sunlight because the 5D MKII screen is ridiculous, as you know

Also.. maybe it's because this 5D was used, but I felt that my 5DII was much tighter (buttons and wheel), although the DOF button seems to stick out further. I would always hit it with my left hand and cause the 430ex to go wacky.

I think it's just you. I just messed with both and don't notice a difference. The MKI has about 4700 clicks, the MKII has about 3900 clicks.

True... I know we are now off topic, but.. have you sent your 5D away for calibration or servicing yet?

Mine has changed hands a few times and I've been told the estimated count is, but I'd like to have the camera cleaned and find out what the actual count is... It's easier to get with the 5DII.

There are no glaring scratches or signs of abuse or wear on the camera, but you can tell from the edges that it's been in and out of bags a few times.

Nope. None of my bodies have needed any service. I've owned both since new so I know what the clicks are.

you should be able to find out the clicks thru exif data.

From what I understand, only Canon can determine actual shutter count on the 5D.

For my 40D and when I had my 5DII I could use this... http://astrojargon.net/EOSInfo.aspx

I don't think they necessarily need service, but I've seen people send them away to get cleaned/ recalibrated.

I'll look into it.

i thought i read somewhere that if you take a photo (as a jpeg) and then upload that un-touched photo to flikr it would tell you?

I sent one of my cameras to canon to be fixed, when i got it back i thought it took better pictures, and had richer colors than when it was right out of the box. (this was a G series body)

Has the mirror recall been performed yet? If not you can send it in to be performed completely free (Canon pays for shipping) and they will clean it as well.

You're thinking of a different body (1D MKIII).

I thought it only extended the warranty on the 5D mirror issue if it actually fails.

I will hopefully call tomorrow once I get some more history from my buddy.

98% sure it does not need to fail to get the recall performed.

Just give them a call. If you send it in be sure to ask for the shutter count and they should be able to get that for you no problem, but they wont give it unless you ask.
