computer hard drive noob question

Had a power outage today which took the life of the hard drive in my HP touchsmart.....its a internal seagate 500gb.

Are all internal harddrives basically the same? can i go buy say a western digital 500gb from office depot and replace it?

if not please tell me what i need to know

thanks

Is it a laptop or a desktop? If it's a computer from the past 5 years it's probably using SATA cables for the hard drive, so any hard drive that says SATA on the bottom right corner you can use as long as its not a laptop hard drive in which case you would have to look for laptop hard drives.

Are you sure the touchsmart uses a desktop hdd? They are awful small computers, and I would not be surprised if there was a laptop hdd inside.

Of course it's SATA, but there are SATA 2.5" drives and 3.5"
