Looking into buying a sword... I have questions

Ive wanted a Katana for a while and Im thinking about buying one. But I dont really know anything about swords, like as in where to buy good ones, laws concerning them, and where to go to learn how to use it. (not that I plan to have to lol) but I would like to at least know how to use it decently if Im going to have it.

It'd be alot for decoration, but id like to learn how to use it too.

anyone on here know anything about any of this?

don't keep it in your car and use it for self defense like you mentioned awhile ago.

for starters... if you are serious about knowing how to use one safely, look for a good kenjutsu school. it will takes years upon years to be proficient... its not easy... and the instructors will kick your ass if you **** around

if you're interested in a real katana, those will also be the people to talk to. expect to spend a few grand on a real one. 10k+ for master quality

well considering a quality knife is atleast 80 bucks, a sword is going to be a few grand, unless you dont care and want a cheap one for like 200 bucks.

I am serious about learning how to use it, at least to a decent degree. Im not really trying to be a master swordsman at this point, but id like to be somewhat competent if I have a sword.

and I was kind of joking about the in the car thing. not promising I was entirely joking, but 80% of me was. I wouldnt have it unless i felt a legit reason to have it (and had already learned to use it. Im not a nut job who wants to go nuts with a sword, im actually planning on taking it seriously)

what he said

i got a decoration set for cheap, but, i wouldn't want to try and use them.

real deal swords are really expensive. and, i think some states you have to register them. don't quote me on that.

i do however, know about the las of owning one in japan really well

lots more training to use one w/o cutting yourself up. more expensive for a real one.

in the event that you actually use it for self defense, you're wielding a long weapon. you'll never be quiet enough or good enough to strike someone with a gun before they shoot you in the face.

wielding a sword in a house is also asking for trouble. it's not a knife... you swing it you're going to hit the wall, your tv, bed, door frame etc. i'd much rather have a knife to use over a sword in a modern self defense scenario.

a gun is easy to get, its cheap, there are a million places that sell them. training is easy to get as well, that is cheaper to afford. a license to carry is easy to get. its quicker to use in a self defense situation and most times all you have to do is pull it out and threaten someone and that is it.

there is a reason we use guns today and not swords...

i can guarantee that a master swordsman in america would tell you using a katana in a self defense in your home or out of your car (which is just ****ing retarded) is just ****ing retarded.

if you want self defense, get a gun. you want a cool hobby and to pick up an art that not many people know, get into kenjutsu.

personally, if i was going to take a weapon art i'd focus on a kubotan. at least that is a viable weapon to use in self defense in every day life

There you go. I have a couple katana's myself when I use to practice, my advice find a sensei.

you want a sword because in jersey you cant really use a gun for self defense, and a sword, well im sure thats banned too. dont bring a big knife to a gun fight.

if you do decide to buy a sword, you can be like me and listen to wu tang, you will be a master swordsman in no time.

just remember,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFSvUMxDWak
