i'd be up for something after work in the KoP area as well. I get bored sitting behind a computer all day and wouldn't mind something else to entertain me

check out some video game stores in the KOP mall. Those stores seem to always hire part time people.

see if any bars you frequent do "celebrity bartending" nights. thats a good way to get started.

I have a few close friends that have been or currently are general manager's of resturants in center city. They have told me that they never hire bartenders without experience. Most bartenders have risen through the resturant hierarchy by first being bar-backs or busboys. Then they are slowly exposed to the bar.

I had always thought that serving a bar was not so difiicult. But after discussing it with them they described how difficult a job it is no matter if your in a chain resturant with 15-20 chairs at the bar to a busy bar where each individual cash register rings out $3-5$ thousand at the end of night. So you have to be fast on your feet and have lots of energy.

Then knowing how to mix drinks is another whole thing. And mixing them so the bar makes money is a talent all to itself.

i was hoping for a hookup at a place that would let me work slow days to get experience and go from there. no biggy... i don't need the money, just something else to do

Waiting tables can be just as lucrative as bartending, depending on the restaurant. If you want to get an intro to bartending, apply at a non-coorporate restaurant that has a liquor lisence, but without a huge bar crowd. I started at a restaurant called El Cactus as a bus boy when I was 14.. I remember they hired 1st time bartenders all the time. The bar was mainly a service bar, maybe 15 chairs total, so it was great for learning because it allowed you to learn the drinks and the basics of bartending without needing the learn the finesse of "schmoozing" right away. Granted you wont make the kind of money bartending at a bar like that as you would at a bar with a real bar crowd, but if bartending is something youre interested in but have no experience with- thatd be the way to get your foot in the door. I started bartending there when I was 17 (yeah, highly illegal), and I enjoyed it. I prefer to wait tables though, I feel as though I can make more money that way. Most restaurants that have a liquor lisence, if youre serving tables, you wont make less than $100 a night, unless youre terrible. Man, I remember Cinco De Mayo I walked out with $390 cash, after tipping the bartender and busser (and I tipped my bussers 20%). Those were the days...

But anyway, If you can avoid a corporate restaurant... do it. Family owned or private owned restaurants are where its at.

Yeah, after 4 years of waiting tables i had to get out too. But I love the fast pace environment. Come in, bust your ass, and make in four hours what your friends make in ten. Cant beat straight CA$H either.
