April Fools?

That sucks, bigtime. Opening up the series to more manufacturers by casting all of your longtime manufacturers and fans aside... that sucks, bigtime.
I think the STi/Evo have enough of a following that they'll continue to be produced regardless, but I wonder if both manufacturears will come out with a 1.6T variant to compete starting in 2013, and if it will be anything exciting in consumer form.

wow that is stupid. making a power plant illegal, if the cars are evenly matched what the big deal? Mitsubishi EVOs and Subaru WRXs are rally cars and now they've been booted out of the sport that they've been a part of for years, that is dumb. Well maybe they'll focus more on road racing and drag racing now.

It'd make more sense to allow 2.0T or 3.5 NA, or something like that... but I guess that'd be hard to match evenly and one or the other would probably have the natural advantage anyway.

Why can't they just put a horsepower/torque cap on the vehicles as opposed to just outright banning turbo cars? That is just ridiculous. A 400hp N/A car has just as much of a chance as a 400hp turbo car. And so what if the other manufacturers can't compete? Guess they should step up their game and build a car worthy of competing. But no, of course, we have to cater to them so 2 of the biggest vehicles in rally racing are no longer allowed. Bull****.

This has happened repeatedly throughout racing in all forms and it will continue to happen in the future. Look at the new rules for F1! I don't think it will hurt the sport too badly. Even the biggest names die eventually.

Over the years Rally has belonged for a few different manufacturers:

Lancia, Audi, Subaru, Ford

It's just time someone steps up their game to take advantage of the new rules!

Their reasoning fails short in my eyes. If these companies want to break into the game then they should just have to bump up their own cars to the specs of the top ones in place.

I just think its strange that the companies that have defined rally for so long are now being shoved out simply because they run FI engines. Maybe everyone will begin to develop n/a motors?

Which is odd because this is the EXACT opposite direction that the performance car industry is heading in so they can become compliant with ever tightening emissions requirements. BMW has already begin to rework their larger N/A engines into smaller turbo-charged ones. There has have been rumors that Ford may consider a Eco-Boost Turbo V6 for a later model of the Mustang replacing the beloved V8! Why is rally trying to run counter to this?

What I am saying, is that I don't think they will have a problem doing that if they actually wanted to.

Yeahs subaru has been out this season which sucks. I was watching the other day and their were only 2 different car companies.. **** was kinda lame. More rules are not going to kill the sport but def lose some fanbase.

subaru announced a while ago they were done with rally racing, this probably had a little to do with it. it probably also contributes to the ugliness of the new subies

I think that had more to do with the fact that the company is facing financial troubles.

This will make the sport cheaper
That will make the cars cheaper
That will make the cars more popular

This is good if you look at it like that.

You can turn down the panic level a few notches. That article the OP posted is from March, the ruling (the switch to NA motors for two years) has been changed since then (as of 6.24.09). The FIA realised they were going the wrong way and that NA=/=Less$$. Current motors will be used for 2010, then for 2011 they transition into the 1.6T (that was originally proposed for the 2013 season).

Malcolm Wilson, BP Ford Abu Dhabi team principal: The 1600cc turbo decision ticks all the boxes. Environmentally, a smaller engine with forced induction is the way all manufacturers are going, and it's the right direction for our sport to go in too. Having said that, there are still a lot of technical details to sort out to get the 1600cc engine to work in a Super 2000 chassis. Whether that can be achieved by 2011 we'll see, but at least the ground rules have been set and we can work now on finding a solution.

Olivier Quesnel, team director of Citroen Racing: We agree with the decision to go 1600cc. Earlier it was a two litre atmospheric engine until 2013 but if this is new solution leads to other manufacturers joining the series then of course we agree it's a good idea. Generally manufacturers are downsizing engines and soon two litres won't be an option, so we need to use other units. For us it won't be any problem.
