Should parents be held legally responsible??

for their kids skipping school? This was a discussion that we got into in a class that I'm taking. I was curious what your opinions are.

There is no perfect answer but someone has to pay if they f' up. Only person I can think of that should is the parent. Granted it doesn't mean they don't care, but it still THEIR kid.

yes parents should be responsible. the only hitch that i can think of is that if a child/student is 15-17years old and skipping school, the parents may have already lost their opportunity to raise, educate, and discpline a child.

Depends on age. If elementery or middle school kids are missing a great deal of school, the only real recourse would be to talk to/penalize the parents which is tough since middle school has a pretty high drop out rate seeing that is when kids start to feel a new-found sence of authority within themselves as they feel older. Parents need to stick to their guns though and if they fail to put a foot down then someone has to (in this case, the government). In my opinion, if a child wants to drop out of middle/high school then the parent is doing something wrong in the first place.

Don't get me wrong though school isn't fun for all, especially kids who are not as intelligent or have other qualities that single them out from their peers, but the idea that education is necessary should be hammered home from day one. When high school rolls around though, like it or not, there isn't much parents can do in order to force their kids to go to school so if they fail to go to school, it should be (and is for the most part), on the kids themselves. After all, it is legal for any student of 16 years of age or more to drop out of school without any legal recourse. Our educational system in this country is in need of desperate reform though considering how far behind the E.U., China, India, Japan, (the list goes on), we are but that is a whole other issue! lol

No way! If your 16 year old child murders someone, should the parents be responsible? At the age kids skip school, they damn right know whats right from wrong. I think the best thing done to stop skipping is what schools are doing now. If you miss 20 or more days, you automatically fail the grade, and have to repeat. In middle school and high school, I was averaging 31-34 days absent. My senior year of high school, they implemented the 20 day rule, and I missed 19. No way in hell am I repeating a grade so that I can have a day of being nonproductive.

Young children, yes. High school, what're parents gonna do? There's only so much you can do to keep your kid in school once they're old enough to make their own decisions.

The class is very diverse in age but allot of people were saying that the parents should not be held responsible. One womans example was "a young single mother living in the city with 6 kids and 3 jobs doesn't have the time or ability to know where all 6 kids are 24 hours a day". My argument was that the single mother shouldn't have had 6 kids and that she was responsible legally. Her situation and/or lack of good judgement doesn't give her a free pass.

Public whippings would solve this. Get a few good scars on your back and you will think twice.

I agree completely. If you can't manange your kids you don't get them.

no, 16 and younger primarily. As in, they leave for school either by bus or foot and just don't go.

If a parent is constantly letting their kids stay home from school that's a problem, and the parents should be held accountable. If a kid is cutting school (like I have once or twice) in no way is that the parents fault.

Off topic: but I went to Henderson in WC which is right next to the police department. Well I was driving my brothers Probe to school like I did everyday for the last 6 months. I literally witnessed 40+ police cars drive past me or my parked car during that time cause I parked right next to the department. Well, one day there was no parking spaces, so I had to turn around in the police station, I am about to pull out and a Cop flew around a bend with there lights on and boxed me in the police parking lot, like I was gonna make a run for it. He was going to write me a $700 ticket for tinted windows, altered license plate, and "a sticker on my windshield". He said he was cutting me a break, and only fined me 270 for the window tint, and he fined my brother (who was at home in bed) with a ticket in the mail for allowing me to drive an unsafe car on the road. He let my friend out of the car to go to school, than made me drive my car home, basically forcing me to skip school... Not sure if he thought I was dropping my friend off or what, but that is SO ILLEGAL. Sorry for the story, just is always the first thing that pops into my head when I hear skipping.

Parents have the ability to call schools to verify their kids attendance. It's not that difficult to do. Also, keep in mind that parents aren't charged unless it's referred to an agency by the school, at which case the agency can contact police. If it's gotten to that point, the kid's missed allot of time. I think the parents are at fault.

Hell yeah parents are responsible. If the kid is 18 or younger, the parents are responsible! IF the kid is over eighteen and older but still in High school, then it is a toss up.
Only in America this would be a topic of discussion.

Yeah, I'm not sure if I could actually believe that story. It sounds like it may be "based on a true story", but theres too much crap in there to be true.

Eh well, I don't know any of you guys in RL so if you don't believe me that's fine.

Heres the car though http://memimage.cardomain.com/ride_i...038_medium.jpg You can see the tint and the solid black on the windshield. Had a Dare plate with the red lettering and dare symbol painted over with black so you couldn't see it. The main purpose of the story though, was that he made me go home, and I missed a day of school because of it.
