Quick question? (night photos)

Im looking for some advise on how to take pics at night.

I recently completed my retrofit, and I was trying to take photos of the cutoff and output against a wall, but my camera said no.

Its a nikon D80. I let it in auto mode, and it wouldnt take, not enough light i guess. I put it in manual mode and tried to get the little gage in the view finder to be in the center, but no luck, the F00 thing kept blinking.

Id like to get some decent pics, but this has handiecapped me.

What should i do to the camera settings to get it to take a picture that isnt all black?

Thanks.

few things

1. use a tripod
2. longer shutter speed
3. check out this link:http://www.basic-digital-photography...ht-photos.html

google is your friend

edit: if its really pitch black where ur trying to take the photo, use a flashlight and manually focus your lens, then take the long exposure

Yep, the link pretty much covers it. Depending on what i'm taking I'm usually doing 10-30 sec exposures. I don't have a tripod yet so i find something solid to set the camera on, but i've used them before and highly suggest picking one up if you're serious.

Yeah, i use a long shutter speed. though, i havn't tried the super long shutter speed shots (talkin 20secs or more).

alot of the car meets i've been too, i end up taking night shots. always bring my tripod, and use a 2second delay on the trigger, so i don't shake the camera while pushing the button.

By any chance would you want a vertical grip for your D80? I have one, been trying to get rid of it.
