This is a little bit out dated, but i figured id throw my .02 sense in here. Check my site in my sig. I use 2 lenses on my d40 at the moment. Sigma 70mm - 300mm and the kit lens, 18mm-55mm.
sigma 70-300 Overall, id give it a 4/5. This is a fairly in expensive lens but offers quite a bit. I use this lens more as a macro lens, than a telephoto lens. It doesnt have any kind of stability which is the lenses downfall (and why its that much cheaper than the rest). While it has some decent reach, it has a fairly small aparature when zoomed in, 5.4 if im not mistaken so low light zoom will be tough without a tripod. The mounting ring is metal, so its not weak, but it will break if you try to pick the camera up by the front of the lens, or bang it hard enough. The lens body is made out of plastic, but looks alright. Here is a snapshot with the lens zoomed out too 300mm, it extends about another 1.5 or 2 inches with the macro switch on, which allows you to focus a lot closer. Please excuse my dogs asshole. ![]() I believe i purchased this off of amazon for 180 bucks, retails for 240 or something like that. Like i said, its a great lens, and it is always on my camera. Realize though, you wont be able to go from shooting a couple hundred feet away, to 5 or 6 feet in front of you quickly. Any specific questions, PM me!
