Gina Photoshoot

My friend is a model. She lives in Texas now, but she was visiting this weekend so we got together earlier today to do a photoshoot. This is my 2nd photoshoot involving people. This time I got to use my new 85mm f/1.8 that I picked up yesterday. I'm so glad that I got it because it really made the difference. So, I'm pretty happy with the results. She also hooked me up with a way to get unlimited shoots with a ton of local models.

Here are two teaser shots. I'm editing the rest.

Not feeling the cropping. All of the photos are very flat.

I modeled my shots after examples I looked at, most of which had very shallow DOF. I also just bought the lens I used for this shoot yesterday, so I was pretty excited to have a f/1.8.

But I'm open to suggestions. Like I said, this was my second photo shoot of a person. My last subject had done modeling before, but wasn't as serious about it as this girl. I should have different girls to shoot soon, so give me some tips guys.

And yeah, I know some of the shots are out of focus on where they should be. I guess that's one of the dangers of using a large aperture.

The last two caught my eye the most. There was more emotion in those IMO but the shots looked pretty good for your 2nd shoot with a person and on top of it using a brand spankin new lens.

Thanks. I agree with you about the emotion. She's into high fashion, which is why all her poses are the way they are. Her cousin tagged along too, who has a degree in fashion and is going to London for her masters in fashion. The last picture was just us fooling around. I personally prefer to do quirky, goofy shots. I have a girl in mind who's a goofball, plus she's all around beautiful. Next time.

errr, the 1st one in your post with multiple pics.. her face is oof. otherwise the 2nd to last one is my favorite, but with her already pale complexion and 'dead' makeup, i feel like the editing makes the photos look even more flat.

Yeah, I already said some are out of focus.

The majority of photos are barely edited. One or two are, but they aren't posted here.

You guys dish out a lot of criticism, which is fine. I'm in a creative writing class where half the class cries when we workshop their work, and I'm a chef so I've been harslhy critiqued by my father for years and learned that you can either cry about it or learn from your mistakes and do it again better, which is why I'm now capable of catering $120/head omakase tastings on the spot to customers.

But no one is offering any constructive suggestions, just negatives and positives. Yeah, I post my stuff to showcase it, but I'm learning and would like some tips.

I'm not the best at giving critique, but the photos, IMO, maybe it's white balance or maybe you edited a bit, but the first few seem a bit on the 'cool' side, almost purple in one or two. I'm not trying to be overly harsh or anything, but the last 2 are the best in my opinion because they don't look so flat and the white balance is a little warmer. The third to last one, the background is distracting to me because of the wheel on the car and the stop sign, so maybe a tighter crop?

And maybe it's just my crappy monitor here at work but the one where she's leaning on the fire escape ladder, there's lines on her arm and parts of the ladder that look purple

Well, I'll be the first to say the look great, especially for your experience level. She's a gorgeous girl too.

personally I like them as a whole.

as stated above #1 is out of focus and #4 the car wheel is distracting(i personally like the stop sign)
The one on the fire escape, the white balance is fine, there is just some chromatic aberration which is giving those purple lines. You can try to edit that out, or make it less noticeable.

I don't like the way she sticks her chin out and up. which is why i think the corn shots are more successful.

Yeah I was gonna say, the shots where the left side of her face is in the front are better.

Ask the next girl to smile. Makes a picture with a girl much better.
