guitar repair and paint?

Its been well over 15 years since i have seen my dads old bass i use to play it all the time. and for some reason i have the itch to get back into playing but it needs a lot of stuff. Its a mid 70's Fender bass i need to get 4 new strings, 4 new tuning keys, the nut, and i would like to see it repainted. Anyone here ever had there guitar painted? mine just has a lot of chips on it and i want it to look good again. any advice? anyone know of any good places to get my guitar checked out to make sure it still works over all the years its been away? and to get some parts?

Im sure everyone has their guy to recommend, but go to Sam Ash Music in KOP and talk to Sam during the weekdays. I used to work there and all of our locals stores that had their own techs would send all the high end gear up to him. He really is a craftsman.

I thought refinishing guitars was a no-no especially vintage ones?

thanks for the heads up guys! i am going to get some pics of it tonight. again its an OLD bass and it has it years of damage. it was never in a case or anything it was just tossed around from basement to basement after i stopped playing over all the neck is still straight and looks to be in good shape i just want it to look better, but who know maybe i will fix it up and put it away and just get a new bass. so far the repairs needed are the following
new nut about 40 bucks
strings 50
tuning keys 50
140 bucks in repairs for it to play again i don't think its that bad!

My brother just recently painted his old Fender... All he used was spray paint, some kind of finisher, and he wet sanded it. It may not be the "legit" way but it looks and feels brand new.

His turned out glossy smooth... He also used bondo (I don't really know what it was, but that is what I am going to call it) to fill in a decent sized dent. Obviously don't do it this way if you want to completely restore it, but if you just wanted to make it playable, it only took 2 days.

I like it the way it is, you can tell it has some history to it, a definite story.

a new one would cost me 5 times more then repairing this one the total cost to repair this one is 150 or so a new one would be 750+ and i don't want to spend that much! this one felt good and was just right for me when i did play
