I agree ^
Usually they squeal when its over spinning so best to find out whats going on before it blows.

My guess is you have a boost leak. If not, then you probably have a bad turbo. But a bad turbo will most likely result in some form of burning oil.

Burning oil = smoke show.

Pressure test.

More than likly its a blown up pipe or turbo inlet gasket. IF the car is holding boost it most likly doesnt have a boost leak .I have had the same problem with on of my old cars b4.

Agreed 100x! I had that exact problem. Does your buddy have a FMIC by any chance? Check all of the pipes and then check the up-pipe!

Its most likely a boost leak of some form.

Bearing freeplay? The VF39 is a journal bearing turbo and WILL HAVE PLAY no matter what. As long as the fins are not contacting the compressor housing or exhaust housing then the turbo is fine. People need to stop thinking all turbos should not have freeplay. Check the exhaust wheel for signs of oil leakage.

Boost leaks sound like a zazoo when building pressure, if he is still on a TMIC I would bet the bypass valve gasket is leaking ;)

total agree with bov gasket issue, only under boost issue solidifies dx. it sounds pretty nasty, like a loud whin/whistle...and realy willl not be large enough to comprimise boost pressure/performance. It could be a leak someplace else also. check vac lines etc etc, zip tie em all. i doubt it's the snail.

I'd also recommend this. One of my friends at work diagnosed a blown turbo but ended up being the bypass valve gasket. In his defense it sounds identical to a bad turbo. It was an 02' completely stock unmolested. That would be an easy cheap thing to try first.

i dont think turbo subarus have gaskets for the turbo inlet. are you speaking of the plastic pipe that connects the turbo and the intake?

You're correct, the inlet is either plastic or silicone and just a clamp that goes over the turbo intake.

i agree with a leak off a possible blown gasket. i had a similar whine on my evo when i blew a gasket out between the turbo and j-pipe. drove fine and boosted fully but whined like hell. the turbo will over spin to compensate for the leak. fix it because it is a quick way to blow a turbo if you are over spinning it.
