Ok, so I'm really bored, and I figured I'd get all of your opinions on a few questions that have bothered me for a while.

First one:
You know the old riddle, "If a tree falls in the woods, but no ones around to hear it, does it make a sound?". Well my take on that, is no. If there is no living organisms what-so-ever around, it merely makes sound WAVES, which are converted to "sound" as we percieve it, in a section of our ears. So if theres no living things around with ears to "convert" it, par say, it only makes sound waves which is not sound, just vibrations.


Second one:
Color is merely the reflection of certain colors out of the light spectrum. Say you have a big red tool box, when light hits it, it absorbs all the color out of the spectrum except red, and it reflect the red back to your eyes. My question is this: If it is completely pitch black, absolutely no light, is the tool box still red? If its not reflecting the red light out of the spectrum, what is it? Is it invisible?

Yea....idk.....I think about weird things a lot. Lets get some of your opinions.

Sound is vibration, as perceived by the sense of hearing.

So if you can't hear it then it doesn't make a sound.

The toolbox is still red but if there is no light hitting it then it is not-visible. That is why if you hid the tool box deep in a dark closet you wouldn't see it.

but you see if u were to put a video camera with a mic, it would record the sounds. so it does make noise

ah but I have to disagree again. It would be converted to the "noise" as we know it when we watched the video yes? So.....I still think it makes no noise. And about the colors....what is it then? Invisible? Or just black? And another thing, why is it that when theres no light its all black, and not white? Since white is the absense of all color...if theres no light, and no spectrum of light, wouldn't everything be white? And....I dont smoke drugs! anymore......much

i've heard something like the second one before. if i remember right it asked 'if a universe existed with absolutely no light, would color exist in that universe?' and i remember something like 'if you bring artifical light(flash light) to said universe, would there be color?'

240sxdann - white is every color of the spectrum combined, whereas black is the absence of light.

if you had a flashlight with a bulb of every color of the spectrum(7 bulbs if i remember right), the light emitted would be white. red, green, and blue will create white light too.

Light is all colors, it just depends on what color of light the object reflects back to our eyes that makes us see that certain color http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color

This is different when mixing pigments to create a color. this is when you get white as the absense of all color, because you mix all color to get black...though when you hand mix black you get a richer color than you would if you used black straight from the tube.

The inside of a toolbox is still red when it is closed. It's simply not reflecting the light waves into your eyes.

The tree makes a sound. It's falling creates sound waves regardless of whether or not anything is around to hear them..they're still being created. That's like asking, if a rockdrops into a pond and there is no one around to witness this does the water still ripple?

The world would still work w/o us there to witness it.

LOL! You guys crack me up. But jspek....havn't you seen me in the picture of urself thread? Yea.....that explains why I think about this stuff and I'm not hooking up w/ hot 16year olds. lol. And scapegoat, how do you know that the universe wouldn't just completely stop without anyone around?? Thats one of those things thats impossible to tell really.

Because it was around millions of years before we were. It's self sustaining and self destructing. We're not the end all be all of existance in this universe or the one next to it. It is what it is, and we're just along for the ride
