Obama School speech causes Controversy

http://news.aol.com/article/obama-sc...versy%2F655701

Obama wants to give a speech to children in school about the importance of education. Some school districts are saying they won't show it (mostly texas). And some parents don't want there kids to see it.

Seriously WTF is wrong with people. IF any president wants to give a speech to all american children about the importance of education, what is the big deal.

The first George Bush did it.

I remember when a local school band here in the Lehigh valley was supposed to play for George Bush (2004). But some radio show host, and democrats said they shouldn't. And ultimately they weren't allowed to play for the president.
So parents had to explain to their children why they had to pass up a once in a lifetime oppurtunity, because of retarded people.

This is not a political thread about polices, but a thread about allowing a president to speak to children about education. (stay on topic)

of couse texas and other southern states wouldn't want a powerful black man who has overcome discrimination his whole life talking about the importance of education to their hick ass children. I swear rednecks, hicks, hillfolk, country bumpkins and the like are the most ignorant, stubborn, and single minded people in this country. idiots...

Nothing wrong with that IMO. The parents have a say in their children's lives, so it's their call.

The issue that came up was that a memo from the Department of Education came out assigning work to students. Basically they wanted to have all children in America write how they are going to help President Obama. This is more or less indoctrination (see: Stalin), and is forbidden under the 10th Amendment which allows only for States to set school agendas and curricula.

I think it's great that Obama stresses the important of a good education. I think it's wrong if it is used politically. Let the parents decide and be done with it.

X2

It's up to the parents at the end of the day and they shouldn't be labeled for not wanting their kids to be exposed to this speech, for whatever reason they have.

this is meant to be a chance for obama to spread propaganda to try and sway children to believe and follow Obama's new policies and plans. I think the parents have every right to be upset and to be against obamas polices being "taught" in their school. It's NOT up to a school to promote politic's. if obama needs to reach out to the children he can do that over broadcast TV (the same way he reaches out to the rest of america), not mandating that children "learn" this a part of their school cirriculum.

Telling kids to stay in school, work hard, and reach their goals is is Obama's propaganda? So he is the first president to want kids to stay in school? GWB did it!
He is not promoting politics(if you read it), he is supporting a good education. It just makes no sense to me.

No a school isn't REQUIRED to show it, but why wouldn't you?

Kids, you can watch anyone you want on TV! As long as it's Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck or any given selection of delicious and informative Fox News Specials. =)

That is what I imagine them saying. If you don't let your kids think for themselves as their brains are still developing while they are young then you are not doing them a favor. You are starving them from becoming free-thinking men and women who could better the world, not become useless weight upon it.

The problem is that they won't release the transcript, so nobody knows exactly what will be said. Parents have a right to know the curriculum for their children. If it is to push his political agenda on to the children, we have created a new era of Hitler Youth. The second the BS starts spewing from his mouth, I see a huge problem.

I have absolutely ZERO problem with this if it's what he is going to do. Again, if it's purely about the importance of education, I applaud it being shown in schools.

As stated before it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to have a president come and speak, especially about the importance of education. Apparently the children’s parents did not get the memo when they were younger about education. And again as stated before a lot of people from the south are just pain ignorant.

i'm sorry that you dont understand politics enough to know that there is more to this than a pep talk about staying in school and reaching goals. I have yet to see the government do anything with out alternative motives, especially this one.

more importantly as i said before a school is not the proper venue for this. broadcast it after school, so the parents and children can watch it together. why is it the government won't do that? hmmm????
