TiC Captures Carolina Motorsports Park

[TURNinCONCEPTS]

This past Sunday, August 9th, TiC competed in Redline Time Attack's Round 5 at Carolina Motorsports Park, and was able to bring home the First Place trophy for the Street class.

This is the third Redline First Place finish in a row for TiC.

We understand that there were some changes to the car for this event, the biggest one being new tires. While this may seem unusual as being a big change it was for this team. Tony Barber, TiC Co-founder, enlightens us as to why.

“We have been running the same tires that we started with for One Lap of America. We tried some different tires in Nashville, but they didn’t work out so we ran that event on the very worn out Dunlops, and still did ok. For CMP we actually cracked open the wallet and picked up a new set of the Dunlops as we know they work, and we don’t have room or patience to experiment with unknown tires at this point.”

The tires that the team has had so much success with this year are the Dunlop Star Specs. For One Lap, Autobahn, and Nashville they ran the 245 width, but with some help from Wheeldude.com they were able to get some wider wheels that let them properly mount a 255 width tire.

There were a couple of other small changes to the car as well. Team driver Tony Wiesenhahn had this to say.

“Subarupartspro.com was able to get us the parts we needed to fix the spare transmission, and we were able to return the 08 STi transmission to the TiC 08 shop car, and run the spare for CMP. The gearing was shorter which was a bit of a disadvantage, but it still worked out. This winter we’ll be rebuilding it with some taller gears to help out with some of the speeds we are seeing at the track.

Despite the shorter gearing the center diff controller we picked up through DCCDPro.com performed brilliantly, and having driven on the stock STi diff controller I can definitely say the DCCDPro is a great improvement.”

TiC Co-founder, Clint Boggess, also filled us in on some suspension changes to the car.

“We kept the alignment settings the same as what we have been using throughout the season, but after watching the car’s reaction to the transitions at Nashville we decided that we needed a little more bump travel so we raised the car a smidge. We know there are no transitions like Nashville at CMP, but after watching the car behavior we decided that the increased travel would help keep the car settled when Tony W bangs the thing off the curbing.”

One of the more interesting things noted this past weekend was the number of people who did not believe TiC was making their claimed 365 wheel horse power. We overheard Clint talking to one person in the paddock about it.

“Yes, it truly is only 365, but there are two things to keep in mind. First, is area under the curve. We have a TON of area under the power curve, and a very smooth power output. Jorge at P&L Motorsports made sure of that when we had the car tuned. That larger area means we have a larger range of revs where we can apply that power. Second, you have to keep in mind the suspension and brake setup. Both are very well sorted for this car and Tony W’s driving style. The suspension [TiC spec AST dampers, Swift springs, and a compliment of Whiteline parts] allows him to carry more speed through the corners allowing for faster corner exit, and the brakes [Custom set up with new Stoptech 332x32 rotors] work so well, that he can brake incredibly deep into a corner.

In the end, it’s not just raw power, but balance of all the major systems and the ability of the driver to use those systems through a wide range of needs.

As for the car itself, we’re not doing anything really crazy. We’ve kept things simple, and it works great, so just about anyone with a Subaru can follow our pattern, and with a good driver be very successful in motorsport.”

Next up on the schedule is New Jersey on the 29th and 30th which will wrap up the Eastern Division of RTA for this season. If TiC can pull off a first place finish at this event they will have swept the entire RTA Eastern Division for 2009.

As it stands now TiC has qualified to be invited to the RTA Championship in Fontana, CA in mid-November.

“We’d like to go to Fontana to see how we do. We’ve actually been talking about it quite a bit, and we’re trying to work out the timing and the budget to let us do so. Hopefully our great showings so far this year will demonstrate that we’re a good shop for others to work with, and that will allow TiC enough budget to get out there.” Said Tony Barber.
