Rear brake upgrade idea......

So yea....I'm being convinced to put porsche 944 rear 4 pot brembos to compliment my 4 pot STI front brembos.....obviously the 4 pots in the rear are much smaller pistons then the front.

The stock STI rears are 2 large pistons, the 944's are 4 small pistons......

The stock STI setup, stock rears on the right:



I'm wondering if their will be much of a difference between the two....

The porsche 4 piston pad size is about double the stock STI rears pad size. I'm just wondering if this effects brake bias and what not. Any opinions?

I would really consider it a novelty but a bit of a waste of time to be honest. For what it would take to set this up you may as well just go with the Brembos and have a matching set. Also take a look at the Break comparison thread on Nasioc for some idea of what 4 pots on the rear would be like.

The porsche rears are brembos too.......and the 4 pots are the same price used as the STI's huge 2 pots. The question really is, which would I prefer, 4 smalls pots or 2 large pots....

yeah i agree with Don its really a waste of time and money, spend that time and money in upgrading (if you can) the 4 pistons in the front to something bigger and stronger don't worry about the rear to much its the front that you need to have doing 90% of the stopping ;)

do you know that the porsche brembos will mount up correctly? I would thing there would have to be some sort of fabrication to make it work, which is where the time and money becomes wasteful. personally i would go bigger in the front if you ware looking for an upgrade that you will notice.

I have a friend who is a porsche certified mechanic and he offered to fabricate a mounting bracket for me. That's why this came up at all, I personally am not to worried about doing the rears but if he is offering to set something up for me.....I'd have to pay for the calipers and rotors of course.

You'll also need custom rotors, etc etc. It will be very involved. If you want a challenge then go for it, it could be cool. But it will be a challenge and more work and probably more money than just doing STi Brembo rears.

Hmmm.....he already has a set of the 4 piston porsche rears, so I guess I'll pick up a set of the STI rear rotors and let him see if he can make it work. I'm not paying for the labor, he is using my car as a test car to see if this works. If it dosent work out, I can always just do the stock STI rears....

Go all out and get the Brembo Big Brake kit.

those are evo calipers, sti calipers dont have the metal hardline at the end. evo calipers are slightly better than the sti calipers since it can fit slightly thicker rotors. but i would not waste my time. what are you looking for far as braking wise? you just want the 4pot "look" in the back? or you want better braking all around?

The pad size on the 4 pots in the rear is almost twice the size of the 2 pot stock STI 2 pot pads. I'm sure this helps in terms of cooling but I doubt the rears get all that hot at all since they are only doing 20% of the work.

Like I said before, this was just an idea and I just was weighing my options before I started doing a rear brake upgrade.
