Just had an 1.5 hour convo w/ my Dad

This was by far the deepest, most introspective and personal conversation we have ever had. I really hate to sound lame, but it was really cool. My parents and I always had a strained relationship, since the time they brought me to a shrink when I was like 8. Since then, I've always felt like the "Black Sheep" of my family. I got in trouble, did drugs, went to jail (briefly, lol), failed out of college (1st year) and had a kid out-of-wedlock @ age 19.

Around that time, is when I came to the proverbial 'fork in the road', I veered off the path I was on, and dedicated my life to my child, and to just doing the best I can do every day. Since then, my relationship with my parents has steadily improved, but its still not perfect.

Tonite, I started talking to my Dad about an Intervention show I saw where the guy was an alcoholic and died... He mentioned bumping into a neighbor whose son was an old friend of mine... Dude (26 y/o) is seriously depressed, an alcoholic and has been in a coma twice for alcohol poisoining. I basically told my Dad I expected him to be dead within 5 years.... This lead into me opening up about my past drug use, bouts of minor depression, understanding and comprehension of my Bi-polar disorder... God was mixed in there, as well as marriage, work, money, "doing what is right", on and on and on...

I really think it was the closest bond we've ever made. I feel like he finally got some insight into my personality and life, and I wanted to re-assure him that he has nothing to worry about, that I am fighter and despite how frustrating it might be to not be able to find a new freaking job where I make more money, when I vent and go off on stuff, its really just me releasing frustration and finding humor in the crappy parts of life. Like, you can't be happy all the time, or else you wouldn't know what it means to be happy. Blah blah, lots of that philosophical stuff.... for almost 2 hours! And my dad is not a 'talker'

It was just really cool and I wanted to share... [damn, I'm a real post-whore today huh? maybe its the Dayquil I took]

Not to sound gay but it usually feels good to have a good talk with a parent. Always feel a little closer to them afterwards.

That was ****ed up. Everyone makes mistakes. At least he knows what he did was wrong and is now trying to do everything in his power to make the best out of what he has for himself and his kid. There aren't too many people that can do that.

I never got along with my father until my parents split up.

We literally got into fist fights, and I broke his foot. After my mom left him, he got medical attention. They got back together after about a year and a half separation, and **** has been SO much better since then. My dad and I can be in the same room without yelling and throwing punches. We actually talk, and have meaningful conversations.

wow. thats crazy, but glad things have turned around for you guys now.

We never really got into fist fights, except one time when my my said I would be "better off dead" so I spit in her general direction.... then started to walk away. Felt like I got hit by a fastball in the side of my face. Took my a few minutes to realize my dad had unloaded with a right hook and almost dropped me on the kitchen floor. lol

Well Jordan, what can I say, not all of us have had a blessed, easy life like you. If only I grew up in a posh, sprawling gated community in Chester Springs.... maybe my life would be totally different!!!.... :D

Man, I used to be really close to one parent or the other. They've been split or a while but luckily they are still friends and talk and are happy towards each other. The only problem is my dads stupid bitch girlfriend who throws a fit everytime my mom stops over to say hi to me. Not even my dad, just me and she throws a fit. Some stupid **** about how my mom is my dads ex and that makes her uncomfortable to have my mom in her house (man could I rant about that ****)....

Anyway... Since my car blew up, I've been kinda distant from both of them I guess. My dad and I are on great terms. The spirits are happy and good when we "talk" and stuff but I haven't really truely hungout with him in a while. And my mom is always workin. I talk to her everyday in the mornings and we are close but things haven't been the same.

Either way I dunno why I'm rambling. That's cool that you were able to talk to him and stuff. That rules

Hey man, that is just life. Not to diminish your feelings, but I'm sure you know you're lucky to at least have both your parents still. I can barely talk to my daughter's mom, but we try our best to cope for her sake. All you can do is live life one day at a time, and hopefully things will be better in the future.

I just think, that as kids, we all had these expectations that life was going to be perfect.... Then as you get older, you realize that, for the most part, life is really hard and can suck sometimes. Its a tough pill to swallow. But your unique life experiencs are what shape you into the person you are.

^lol man you're on a roll today.

But yeah you're right man, I am lucky to still have both parents around and have then still be ok towards each other. Plus I agree that life does suck sometimes but I just roll with it because even though I don't see/talk to them as much as I used to, my parents are my biggest supporters when it comes to anything I do for me (car, school, etc). Without em I'd be nothin. Most people don't remember that when it comes to parents.

lol, sorry man. Some things i think you should keep to just your good friends, if anyone at all. Details about the relationship with your parents is one of them.

Not at all. But I think it's a little overboard to wish death on someone like that when you don't know ther persons history. With that said I'm sure Jordan was being sacastic. But Im not one to speak for him and we should stay on topic.

I had a nice convo with my mom this morning. I talk to her at 8am everyday and she's excited for me to take my car somewhere to get it buttoned up and safe. It was nice. She even said she might be coming to the car meet this week lol

See.. this is the kind of BS that occurs when members treat off-topic like it's their personal daily journal to write in.

Remember people, quality over quantity..
