Mclaren vs Bugatti on Top Gear

Heres the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXsm_vzRLnw

So they were in the Emerites where people have these kinds of cars to loan and the same people who have those cars have the power to have pubic roads closed so that they can street race. Pure awesomeness.

But what do you guys think of this race?

I find it pretty incredible that from a roll the 19 year old F1 will still beat the 3 year old Veyron to ~170mph. But if u consider all the numbers, this outcome makes sense. But it just shows how great the mclaren is on so many levels.

discuss....

Yep. Its not all about top speed anyways, I bet the F1 would make beating a Veyron around a track look like a walk in the park. But I have no experience with either (obviously!) so its all just hearsay. The F1 is just one of those legendary cars.

Plus, the McLaren is a three-seater. More space, more hoes.

awsome. f1 all the way, regradless of the outcome.

If it wasnt in the desert though, the veyron probably would have done even better though.

I could go on and on why I dislike the Veyron, but I won't.

F1 all the way. IMO there hasn't been a true road car that has been meticulously engineered with the outcome being as amazing since the F1.

Ya, I have "Driving Ambition" written by the team that created the F1, and I'll admit, I havent read it completely cover to cover, but I have read alot of it from every section of it. And I must say that I dont think there has ever been another car since that was built to be the best possible sports car that could be made at the time without compromise. The only car that I would say comes close to the F1 in this regard is the Pagani Zonda, but as extreme as Pagani takes things, they still dont have gold lining the engine bay lol. I mean, the F1 was literally THE BEST performance car that could possibly be made back in the early 90's when it was in development.

Now, I love the Veyron, I think its really a marvel of engineering. As the F1 has things the Veyron does not, the Veyron can do things that the F1 could not. The veyron is amazing because it is a car that literally anyone who can drive a car can drive. Whereas u really need to know how to drive to handle the Mclaren, everyone who has driven the bugatti says that the ease of driving is the most surprising part. I think even someone like Paris Hilton wouldnt have a problem hitting 250mph in the veyron on the right course. And James May saying that the car never felt even a bit unstable even at top speed is quite showing of how well made the bugatti is.

The Veyron is a road car, the F1 is a race car that is street legal. thats the real difference. Both have been "de-throned" from the title of fastest production car, but neither has been dethroned from their purpose. the Mclaren is still an unrivaled driving experience and its design is still unequaled. Also, nobody has been able to beat its speed without forced induction, so its achievement still stands and may be made even greater by that fact. The Veyron hasnt really been dethroned because its "overthrowers" are nowhere near as drivable and solid. The SSC ultimate Aero burns out in 5th at 190mph for God sake. Not safe, and not easy or even comfortable to drive fast. Bith the SSC and Koenigsegg are great cars with their own merits, but both are far less engineered than the veryon and are far more hardcore. So each car is still standing strong for what they were built for.

F1 is more my kind of car. Simple, and about driving, not technology.

I disagree about the F1 being a street legal race car. I know what you're getting at (the harshness, power, lack of luxury, etc) but, from day one, Gordon Murray designed it to be the ultimate road going car while still being somewhat drivable on your daily routine. It just happens to kick ass on the track too.

somewhat driveable is teh troof. Although I love the F1 its not the ultimate "street" car. it is a "steetable" car. It's wayy to loud inside, and too harsh of a ride. plus, i seriously dout it's reliable on a daily basis.

check out this old 5th gear vid.

That is true in many regards, like emphasis on making it a real street car was given high priority, but that was of course all in comparison to cars like the F-40, Vector, XJ-220, and 959. But it really was all about the track when it came to the performance side. The car was way more livable on the street than all of its competition in that market at that time. but it was hardly a "livable" street car. Only someone who REALLY wanted to DD a Mclaren would put up with the hassles of a car like that on a daily basis. Most of their customers have entire collections of cars, let alone just another car to DD. but yes, I do consider its livability compared to the other supercars of the day to be one of its great achievements .

But theres also one thing were forgetting here, I think that the F1 GTR is the only GT class car to beat the Prototype cars for an outright victory at LeMans. thats pretty damn impressive.
