Severe Allergies & Treatments?

Anyone here suffer from really bad allergies and stuff like Claritin, Zyrtec, etc. doesn't work for them?

I don't even think these are seasonal allergies - it happens to me all year long. I never had any allergies, except spiders, until like 2-3 years ago and now they're really bad. I'm starting to develop allergies to eating seafood.. and despite growing up around dozens of animals for the last 20 years, I'm starting to get really bad allergy attacks being around my dogs. My dog isn't even allowed to sleep in my bed anymore, I can't even pet him or play with him for too long or it sets off my allergies too.

It's getting to the point where I'll go to sleep and wake up a dozen times a night or wake up and stay awake for hours blowing my nose. I've been reading about more intense treatments like immunotherapy and was told to see an allergist. A friend of mine suggested I start trying to determine if I have allergies to certain foods.. like eggs, milk, etc. I've tried Claritin, Claritin D, Zyrtec, Benadryl (only helps my seafood allergies), 3 kinds of nasal sprays, and none of it has worked.

Anyone here have any experience with allergy treatments that aren't OTC?

The OTS stuff never does anything for me. I'm not that bad so I just ride it out.

I used to be able to, when they first started a few years back. Now, though..

go to an allergist and get a scratch test. they make tiny scratches all over your back and put drop of common allergens in them. if you're allergic, that spot will turn red and itch. once you know what your really allergic to, the doctor can prescribe something to help. i have severe allergies and i couldn't even function without the medication my allergist gives me.

See your Dr. for this if OTC meds aren't helping. I take Allegra 180mg once a day but I still occasionally suffer from out breaks.....it's just the way it is. If you live in the Tri-State area, odds are high that you will have allergies. We have such a variety of vegetation, plus our humid climate provides many irratants. Good luck.

I went last Friday and they did the test on my forearms. They gave me Allegra D and some nasal spray but doesn't seem to work real well.

mine are killing me.
I've had bad allergies for a long time. mainly seasonal but i'm also really allergic to mold and musty areas.
i used to take clarinex (prescription) now i've been taking some shop rite brand allergy medicine, has the same ingredients as claritin but half the cost. i forgot to take anything today though and am suffering for it. luckily a co-worker gave me a zyrtec but so far I haven't noticed a difference. my noce feels like i have a cold, it's soo sore from blowing it UGH!!! let alone i don't have as much energy cause of all the blowing and sneezing

they need to figure out how to surgically remove allergies ;)

For me, seasonal isnt the issue. im allergic to every ****ing animal. I cant be in a room with a cat without my throat swelling closed. Only thing i do is be patient, avoid whatever i have to, and always have allergy meds on hand. Contrary to you jul, benedryl works fine. i just react terribly when i take it. within minutes im incoherent.

Yes.

Side note: I'm not usually for hokey, holistic ****, yet I hate putting things in my body, i.e.-pills, aspirin. However, I had some accupuncture done at a former teacher's suggestion, and it worked wonders. Two years in a row, and I'm feeling great. I keep a couple claritin in my car for emergencies, but like I said, once a year around this time and I'm golden.

^^im a needlephobic so thats out of the question for me. I hear that accupuncture can practically cure anything lolol. how about accupressure though? think that would work in a similar manner? I wouldnt even do accupuncture to save my life. the idea of that.....i start sweating and panicing. ever see a fat kid sweat? of course you have lol well thats me at the thought of accupunture.

I was in the same boat a few months back, I never had allergies growing up but as soon as I graduated college every year they got worse and worse until this year I just couldn't take it and I went to an allergenist. They did the scratch test on my back and it turns out I was allergic to mostly everything some things much worse than others, so I decided to get the shots started. They say that there is significant improvement in %80 of the people that do the shots and stick with them but it does take a full year for the immunity to really take affect, but for me that is well worth it if I don't have to take Claritin every night any more! You don't even have to pay a co-pay for the allergy shot and I get mine on my lunch break every Monday so it's not much of a hassle at all.
