Subaru Guru's Diag My Engine Noise. Ryan, Ray, ralph, etc! VIDEO INSIDE!

dudes. in florida with my car, which about two weeks ago started making a knocking noise after starting it one time. Been doing it ever since, sometimes its loud, sometimes its quiet. Sometimes it doesn't do it at all.

Oil pressures seem normal, 30-40psi hot idle, 70-90 cruising. Same as they have been since day one. Changed the oil a few days after the noise first occured, didn't see any excessive metalic particles. I have put over 500 miles on the engine since the noise started, engine doesn't miss a beat.

Noise is most clearly heard when placing a 20 inch screwdriver onto pass side cylinder head, right above cylinder one, right behind timing cover.

at first i thought piston slap, which would be odd to just appear out of nowhere. Now that i localized the sound, i am confused. Could a brokem spring/bucket do this?

here's a vid of hte noise, let me know what you think. In the last second of the video, the noise dissapears altogether. so odd.

does not seem to be missing at all. I mean look at the vid, no shaking/stumbling. No CELs either.

I need to find somewhere where i can pull the valve cover off.

valve spring would cause a running issue i think, but def a possibility.

I would think it wouldn't cause a running issue. But stranger things have happened. Shimless buckets??

yup, shimless. That would have been my first guess if they were shimmed buckets. Im thinking MAYBE timing belt tensioner failed, causing valve to hit piston at times?

also interesting is this situation.

when assembling the heads, one bucket would not drop in nicely. I ended up getting it in, but it didnt move as freely as i liked. So i replaced it. replacement bucket worked fine. I was confused as to why ONE bucket that was stored in the same place as the rest, was faulty.

here is a video of it stuck in place before i got it out. Really cant recall which valve it was for, but from looking at the video, id say its intake valve 1 on cyl 1. Which is where the noise is loudest...hrmm..

def weird. I've had stuck buckets before also but they have always came out and felt fine after cleaning. I use a valve lapping tool to pull them out.

possible the lobe is smacking a stuck bucket???

I hope its simple... do you have to pull the motor to get a valvecover off and actually see anything?

not a rod bearing noise.

not a main bearing noise.

not timing belt tensioner.

not wrist pin.
