I might be losing my job.

Hey guys,

I'm new on the board....figured I'd blog a bit here and reach out for some help being a car enthusiast and all, maybe anyone around here can help.

Today I walked into my internship, a known recording studio in NYC to learn that we might be closing. A lot of BIG NAME studios in NYC have been closing (Philip Glass's Looking Glass, Sony music in 2001, Electric Lady has laid off people, etc) I've been interning there since October and recently was promoted to General Assistant with keys to the studio. Right when I feel like I'm moving up in ranks and paying my dues (it takes me 2 1/2 hours to commute via train to NYC, and it costs me about 50 dollars a day w/gas and food). Working 2-3 days a week...costs a lot for me. The past 2 months, I've been on rotation, assisting and finally getting paid (and album credits) so things were looking well and financially up to par.

Our Studio was a bit slow, but moving along--unfortunately it wasn't because of USA's economy that killed us---it was Kyoto, Japan. Our company is based out of Japan, and from what I heard...their economy isn't so hot either. So it was the Japan location deciding to "pull the plug". They decided to put their money in publishing which basically paid the bills for our studio to thrive. Downsizing the music/recording department seemed logical...

Obviously with today's economy and technological advancements, the music and recording industry is in a weird state of flux. People download everything illegally and now you can record full length albums in your bedroom. The quantity of music is at an all time high, but the quality of popular music is at an all time low. I'd rather wait three to five years knowing that good time and money was invested on producing top quality music in a good recording studio.

Today, the budget to make great albums in those great acoustic spaces doesn't exist. Sonically, the quality of today's music is HORRIBLE. Mp3's sound terrible and ipods and earbuds literallly destroy our hearing. Remember when we could listen to a cassette over and over again without getting fatigue in our ears? Even when CD's came out, I miss buying a great album from so and so, reading the booklet over and over again, getting finger prints all over it, reading credentials or memorizing the lyrics, in awe of the pictures...

It looks like I might be starting over again. I am well qualified in the Recording studio environment (I'm a musician with knowledge of many musical instruments and can play 7 of them, I do some producing, scoring, and am a studio drummer by trade).

I'm looking/thinking of possibly getting into Post Production. I do have some contact at NFL Films, however they are in the process of downsizing. It'd be ideal to do something like audio to video sync for Automotive Enthusiast DVD's, like Best Motoring etc. I have friends who are gamers and said I should check out doing audio for video games.

I need a good day to think things over I guess....I still love music and won't stop recording music, and or performing. It's just awful to know that the music industry isn't what like it used to be...its at an all financial low, and famous studios that recorded some of the best music ever are now downsizing and or closing.

Well, if anyone here has any leads that might help me and put me in the right direction, I'd be honored and appreciated. Thank you to those who are reading this, I figured blogging would help me clear my mind.
