Pics from my unauthorized presence at the Rolex Grand Am race

So i went to the Rolex Grand Am race at NJMP today to check out the action in the rain. before the race began the pits were opened up to regular ticket holders to get a view of them. I guess I must have had my back to the security guards when they cleared the pits of unauthorized people, because when i turned around, they were closing the gate, and the cars were getting ready to take their place on the grid. So i decided to walk around & enjoy my illegal access - and take a few pics of the things i saw during the race:

The aftermath after the 1st turn in the race

Everyone in the pits watches the races timing information. . . . and speed channel:

ever wonder how the lug nuts stay on when they do a quick tire change and the wheels arent one lug? answer: they glue the lugs to the wheel.

any closer to the action, and I would have been hit.

complete spare front ends ready to go

real time telemetry on all aspects of the car during the race - including track position and steering angle

Patrick Dempsey's Race team. . .

. . . Patrick Dempsey . . .

. . . and the mob of housewives waiting to catch a glimpse of Pactric Dempsey:

The Jack Daniels Race Team:

All in all, the race was pretty awesome. while it was wet all day - I dont regret going to the race one bit. It was actually pretty cool to see the cars race in the rain. and my advice to those who wish to damn the man and attempt access to restricted areas - its all about presence. when the security guy looks at you, look back at him like you belong there.

awesome man. I loved it when I got to be that close for the Indy 500 and St. Pete Grand Prix. It's so much fun.

a few more pics:

a drivers change, and a full set of tires:

when the old wheels were pulled, they were still smoking & steaming - even in a driving rain:

some racing action down the front straight:

waiting for permission to restart from a penalty stop:

The RX8s were by far the loudest vehicles anywhere - even in the pits:

another quick shot during a drivers change:

Nice going...way to stay in the action! We walked the open grid and then headed over to the outside of turn six to watch the race. Great time. Links to my shots from the weekend:

not just a whole front end - with headlights, radiator, and mirrors,

but entire rear ends as well. you can sorta see it behind the spare front end. they keep then on a dolly made specifically to hold the spare parts.

oh, and all the body parts have that crazy expensive gold foil underneath the entire part.
