Nail In Tire :(

So I was thinking something was wrong with my bike the last few days. I finally found it. Flat tire. There's a lovely nail in there. So now I need a new one. The current tire is a 150/60R17 M/C (64W) Pirelli Diablo:

What's the biggest tire I can upgrade to if it's possible to upgrade? Any recommended places to purchase the tire from? What would I be looking at to remove the rear tire myself? Thanks.

People on my Hawk GT forum are telling me that I can patch/plug it. They've done it themselves before and gone thousands of miles with no issues. Anyone here patch/plug a bike tire?!

We were in myrtle beach two years ago for bike week when a buddy got a nail. We plugged it and he's been riding on it ever since. Go get a plug kit from pep boys and be done with it. Its probably in the center right? If so go for it.

Thanks guys. It's not in the center. It's prob 2" off of center, maybe a little more.

Plugs can blow out, especially under high speeds. Just dismount the tire and patch it. And unless you change to a wider rim, go with the stock width tire or your most likely going to hurt the handling.

i also patched a tire but just to get me home. i never rode with it after i got home. some guys will ride with it that i know. but i ride a lot and sometimes we ride a little fast i don't want anything to happen. as for the tires size i always go up one size example my fzr had 180 so i went to 190 didn't hurt anything, my r1 comes stock with 190 and i went to 200 and didn't hurt anything. so you can go from 150 to 160 and should be ok all depends on the clearance you have in the swing arm and i your brake line

Thanks guys. EVERYONE on my Hawk forums are saying that they've run plugged/patched tires for thousands of miles without issue, and at speeds above 130. At the same regard some of my friends/mechanics are saying never to do it... so I am getting both sides... great. I worked at a tire shop for a while and we plugged/patched tires all the time. Never really had many issues, even on bike tires. Stupid complicated bikes

They're also saying I can go up to either of these tire sizes:
160/70/17 = 25.8x6.3/17
170/60/17 = 25x6.7/17

Talked to some of the guys here at work who ride too much for their own good, including racing professionally. They said they've run plugs on their tires on tracks at over 160 MPH, as well as putting thousands of miles on the tires with 0 issues. So plug it is.

I've put about 250 miles on the plug so far and it's been fine. New tire is $150 for the rubber, plus $$ for shipping, plus removal of the old tire and then the installation, mounting, balancing of the new tire/rim. Fun.
