Thumping noise

Im getting a thumping noise on deceleration only. It sounds very similar to the noise you would hear if you had a flat tire. It is mostly noticeable when decelerating in 3rd gear, right around 2,000 rpm. Its hard to pinpoint if its coming from the front or the rear of the car, because of the way the noise resonates though the whole car.

My original diagnosis was that my axle that had been leaking grease was the cause of the noise, but I swapped the axle out for a brand new one (needed to be done sooner or later anyway), but the thumping persists. Motor mounts are fine too.

Any ideas?

Check your exhaust hangers? If it comes and goes with engine noise thats the only thing I can think of. Suspension noise wouldn't really matter on engine speed.

His ball joints must be shot to hell if he hears them on deceleration.

Yeah the exhaust is hanging just fine. Motor mounts are fine, and one axle is new while the other one seems to be in great shape.
I need to recruit someone to go for a ride with me to try to hear where the noise is coming from. Driving, its almost impossible to pinpoint.

There is some up/down freeplay in the drivers side axle that does make a clunk when you push up on it, but I THINK I remember there always being some play there... who knows. If that was the case it would be a diff issue, but I have a feeling its something more simple then that.

I doubt its the balljoints as the sound is not really coming from one side of the car.
I wish I had a lift so that I could just look over everything.

How can you tell it's not coming from one side of the car if you can't tell if it's coming from the front or back?

Hahaha good point.
But from what I can tell, the noise is in the center of the car. Like an inner axle thumping or something in the trunk. Doesnt seem like its from one side, but who knows.

Those are more like a roar and scraping...

I would say check stuff like rear diff bushings but....

Check shifter linkage/bushings? Only thing in the center of the car I can think of

I know this is stupid but make sure all you lugs are tight. I had a thumping a while ago and it turned out my lugs were loose on a wheel. BTW I saw a Celica all trac the other day. I don't know if they are super rare though.

Thats a good idea and one of the first things I checked.

Celica Alltrac, rare? Well, they only made 1500 of them from 1990-1993. So id say yes.
