Engine noise..

Quote:
Car: 2001 Chrysler
Engine: 3.5 HO V6 125k miles
Octane: 87 Manu Suggested running 89 or 92 depending on cash on hand
I noticed recently that my engine makes a ticking type sound occasionally when I maintain higher RPM. It sounds like metal clinking almost, I normally can only hear it when Im on a bridge or when the cars surrounded by walls and I hear it resonate off. Also I can occasionally hear it if Im in too low of a gear and try to accelerate.

Someone suggested that I should try thicker oil or Lucas. Engines got 125k and im still using 5-30 like manufacturer suggests.

IS this the best first step, and what should I do next?

Does this happen on 87 octane only?

Changing the oil cant hurt...not a BAD step to do...but have you tried upping the octane? That could be an even easier fix. When was the last time the valves were adjusted?

Do you have hydraulic lifters? If so, with mileage they wear down and they will tick with light weight oils. Try switching to 10w30. I know my engine is noticeably louder with thinner oil.

happens on all octane levels, and i am tuned properly for 89, so thats what I try and run it at.

Cannot hear it at idle. Only while in motion.

I will note that valve lifters were sticking at startup when it was cold (not while driving), so we added valve lifter stuff, since than it started ticking while driving too.

Actually 5w30 and 10w30 are the same at operating temps. Try 10w40.

i wouldn't do 10-40 in the 3.5 Chrysler motor. those things run tight tolerances...

try a better oil first if u think it is related to lifter noise...
