1996 Jetta 2.0 starting issues.

My car wouldn't start the otherday so I went and got a new starter (Duralast). Today I put the starter on and the car started like 3 times now won't start again. There was a plastic peice on top of the starter that kind of held the wires and such together, when I put the new starter on I didn't put that back on. I also didn't use the new bushing it came with for the armature. I had no way to get the old one out. I'm pretty sure I connected the grounds back up properly.
I forgot to connect 1 ground wire though but still it still started at that time. I reconnected the ground wire to one of the posts on the starter and now the battery light is on and it still won't start. What could the problem possibly be? Does anyone have a picture of a starter on a '96 Jetta so I can look an see how everything goes. Thanks, Jeff.

try cleaning off all your connections from batter to starter to everything. it's amazing what cleaning a dirty ground will fix.
