Any dendrologists? tree experts?

what is wrong with this tree? It looks like the roots are growing upwards. these are the best pictures i have of the tree. in this pic you can see them growing out of the ground and the tree is to the right

heres another weird tree i found. havent figured this one out yet...

I think this pic just shows a tree striving to find soil for its roots within the small area it has.
