portfolio help from my fellow photogs?

hey guys,
ive got an interview with the paper up here on wednesday and I have to give them my portfolio.

I plan on just showing the album that i have on flickr.

my question is, if you guys get some time, can you run through it and see if there are any shots that dont belong, and if so, why?

Thanks!

I'm at work so no free time 'cept to write this lol. Make sure to print out a port too. Don't just show up with a link to it. Include as much photojournalistic photos as you can, but you're okay delving into other genre's a little as well. I've done freelance work for the Intelligencer, the Globe, and a few others papers in MontCo, as well as the Inquirer. GOOD LUCK!

Might want to edit it down a lot

Aim for about 20 pics

Agree on editing it down a lot... only the best of the best should be in your portfolio, and about 20 images is plenty. You can thin out the redundancy and instead try to show your versatility. Keep it short and sweet though, I heard that a million times in school. Less is more...

I agree again. If you do more then 20 or so pictures, it starts getting a little redundant and long for the person looking at the pictures. Remember, you can show your quality of work, but they are going to want to speak with you as well. Don't fill up the whole interview time with just them looking through pictures that really have no right to be there.

Collegian?

I would definitely bring a printed portfolio. I'd say 15-20 pieces max. Make sure you show them a variety of situations as well [lighting, subjects, seasons, events].

If you need any help getting stuff printed, let me know. I'm a lab tech for the print lab in Borland.

Yes PRINT A PORTFOLIO. Sending a link is just lazy to be frank, and that will come across. Print it out and mount it if you can on nice black paper or place them in some kind of itoya book which has that already. Presentation goes a long way.

Agreed.

The Bookstore at the Hub sells portfolios, so does Uncle Eli's downtown.

You'll need one with sleeves. Mount your photos on black core matboard. Flat mount them with spraymount, DO NOT use rubber cement.

What are the rates for that lab?

I don't like spraymount, but i'm not against it if it's all you have. Try this stuff called twin tac, it's like a double-sided sticker. You peel the first side of wax paper off, lay your photo down and cut it out with an xacto. Then peel the back paper off and lay it down on your black paper/board. It's clean, permanent, and easy. Good luck!

That actually sounds way better than spraymount.

I can't stand the overspray from spraymount, but it's far more effective than using rubber cement. Not to mention easier.

Dan, you have a PM.
