they shouldn't care. since your odb-1 ecu, they will just take emissions from the tailpipe. as long as you pass emissions, don't worry about it.

very true. i use to have my old car registered in jersey and i hated it. only good thing about it is:

1) its good for 2 years
2) once you pay the registration, the inspection is free.

i hated going to those drive thru inspection places.

as far as the 14 days thing, you dont have to do it in 14 days. i had an integra that i needed inspected, i waited til well past 14 days and i just scheduled an appointment on their website and brought that paper with me, along with my license, insurance and registration. they are strict though.

FWIW... my 14 days is now about 2 years. My car won't pass. I understand the risks, but it just isn't something easily noticed despite getting pulled over a few times.

Question, do they visual check for EGR equipment? I took off all my EGR equipment when I swapped in a motor, had my ECU reprogrammed to have EGR deleted.

they wont actually look for it, but if it throws off anything for your emissions they will fail it. I been drivin my jeep for a few months now with a rejected sticker. first time I took it there they wouldnt inspect it cause it was lifted too high. so I put some real small wheels on it and took it back and they failed for the emergency brake not being tight enough. then I was supposed to have 45 days to get it reinspected where they would just have to check the E brake and that would be it. wouldnt even have to wait in line. so I fixed that but then my buddy i borrowed the wheels from needed them back so I went there again with my bigger tires on just hoping they would not even measure it and just check the brake... nope! so I stopped trying. They have a special inspection for lifted vehicles i can do, but that has a bunch of other stipulations i would fail for.

Yes they do check. I'm a Licensed inspector for a Private inspection facility.

If you do in fact drive a 96 then you have to go through a OBDII test meaning plug in. But since you have a swap I'm not sure how that could pan out. "Hypothetically speaking" the inspector could do you a favor and run your car on the dyno and enter your car as a car that can't be plugged in. In which you would have to pass a ASM5015 test which is a dyno run of 50% load at 15 mph to monitor your N0x levels.

Where is South Jersey are you from?

ha tell me about it, its a joke. i had to go 3 times with my integra before it finally passed and each time i went, they told me something different needed to be fixed. why cant they just mention it to you at once?

You must have waited more then 45 days each time then. If you fail once and fix the problem within 45 days they only check what you failed for. If it goes past them 45 days then it becomes a full inspection again. Unless you went through and they couldn't complete the full test initially because the vehicle was unsafe.

DOHC, just go get your car inspected, if they fail you, you get like 45 days to fix it...my mom failed and she just drove it for a month and fixed what was wrong at the end of the month

it's not like you have to pay a fine or anything, so just go

i have a JDM motor in my supra, i have a catback and no EGR or anything and i passed with flying colors (emissions-wise)...only thing they ALMOST failed me for was my freaking windshield wipers, the car sat for a few years and they dryrotted...the guy told me they'd let it slide but to replace them ASAP

An engine swap into a pre 96 car doesn't even have to be brought up to a inspection station since anything 95 and older goes on the dyno regardless or gets sniffed at least. (other then diesel).

His situation is a bit more difficult since he is a 96 (OBDII) with a pre OBD engine and computer in it. So they would try to plug in to the car and see there is no communication, and then he would fail. Yes he would then have 45 days to fix the problem...but there is no fix.

To my knowledge, vehicles with swaps have to be swapped with a engine that is newer then the vehicle. This poses a problem for you. If I were you I'd call the state to see what you can do.
