VW Forum Member Might Have Found Stolen Wheels on Ebay

Just a bit of a backstory... A buddy of mine that lives in Rochester, NY had a Black MKV GTI with a bunch of work done to it. Most importantly (in relation to the story) he had a set of HRE 540 wheels custom spec'd.

In March of 2008, he took it to the dealership to have routine maintenance. The car had to sit overnight and he returned to pick it up and it was in this condition.

Interestingly enough, the car was parked just outside of camera view. To their credit, the dealership made things right. They ended up buying his GTI and trading him up to a MKV R32. In his eyes, he made out on the deal and he is totally happy driving this..

Fast forward to today. Someone recognizes the wheels for sale on Ebay. Posted from Rochester, NY and posts it on Golfmkv.com.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Parts...3A1|240%3A1318

The cops have been called, but the original owner has no interest in the wheels anymore since the dealership made him whole. In the interest of justice, he is trying to prevent this guy from profiting off of these stolen (allegedly) wheels. If they aren't stolen, then it is highly coincidental that someone had an exact set of wheels, which have never been seen on a MKV GTI other then the OG's car, in the same town. The original owner has all of the original HRE purchase order information, so it should be interesting.

Love how the seller has 19 transactions and a rating of 91.3. I can't wait to hear how this turns out so keep us updated. I'd want the wheels back either way, i would then sell them myself.

He updated on our club forum that he is with the police going to identify the wheels. The police told him that since he was "paid back" by the dealership, they don't think that the wheels will get returned to him, nor does he want them.

Supposedly the people involved with the shop that posted on Ebay have mob ties.

Thank you. My point exactly. Basically the cops are saying it's ok to steal wheels from dealerships because they'll just pay for it and it won't be a big deal!

Per his post on our club forum..

"I went with the cops and guess what that the address on 1640 was just a 4x4 empty room so we called that number and the guy asked the cop if he would call back in 5 minutes and he did.Long story short the russian dude could barely speak english and told the cop he has 14 different partners and he has no idea where the wheels are at this point and time to be identified.so the cop asked to meet with the russian guy in person on monday"

So basically this guy gives the run around to the police.

I wish there was a way to report the items to the ebay. Unfortunately whoever buys the wheels could potentially be receiving stolen property and would have to turn them over (without getting money back) and the Russian dude would be walking away with the $.
