How do you get stuff stolen at a meet?

Okay, so maybe this is a n00b type question but I was reading here and on H-T where people made comments about getting their cars and stuff stolen from attending meets. How is this possible?

I am thinking you are right there and only if you go inside a restaurant for an extended time or somehow leave your vehicle open and actually leave you shouldn't be missing a thing. Isn't the purpose of a meet to get together with like minded enthusiasts? I know the question sounds naive but I am aware that not all people who attend meets are someone who you would explicitly trust. But I would be dismayed if I attended a meet and was say down at one end of the line of cars looking around and came back to the other end to discover my stereo gone and nobody knew anything.

Or, is it that you show off your vehicle at a meet and the unsavory characters return to your stables at night and help themselves?

Yes, I realize that if I leave my wallet on the dash that a strong wind will blow it out and down into the storm drain and it probably washed all the way to the Chesapeake Bay even on a perfectly calm sunny day.

Sadly, theifs scope out meets, and are probably cool with a lot of the people that attend them. I guess it depends on the meet. Some of the meets I've been to I wouldn't put it past people. But theres also some (well one meet) that I go to where I know I can trust people, and if somebody new comes, they know if they are being disrespectful or anything, they better watch themselves.

Well, I never trust anyone right off the bat and never give people benefit of the doubt. I always assume people are in some way or another not worthy of trust.. trust builds up. Not that I'm worried about anything being stolen out of my car because well, it's a Failalier.. but I would never trust anyone 100% at a meet with anything (car, food, purse), unless they're my friends. If you think about it, putting a lot of nice cars in one spot and leaving them unattended at one point or another kind of opens up the door for theft.

thief's will follow people home un-noticeably and scope it out and then take your car. there was alot of honda's taken at honda day in 2007 supposedly

Never had that happen to me. If I notice a car coming behind me from a meet or something I will definitely take a different route and lose them.

it just depends on the location and ppl ur with.

when i went to a maxima meet in maryland i had my windows down...keys in the car...money on my seat for almost 5 hrs of that day and nothing was taken. and there was at least a good 25+ ppl there. and all the ppl there i chatted with on the maxima forums for nearly a year so we were already cool with each other.

I've seen people on forums that have had blow off valves stolen as well. lol. People are crazy these days and it's hard to trust anyone anymore.

The whole purpose of a meet is to meet with like minded car tuners anyone who goes to a meet to steal stuff deserves to then get their ass beat the **** up! thats just not moraly correct in any way possible

ou guys are all extremely naive and clearly not honda drivers. At meets, people will casually walk up, get your plate number/vin. Make fake info for themselves, go to a dealer(they could also potentially work there) and order keys, then just go and pick up their new car whenever they have a chance. Apparently at a dub meet recently someone in an srt4 got pulled from his car, beat up, and they took his car apart and left parts everywhere.

I always lock my car if I plan on walking more than 10 feet away from it. I even have it locked 24/7 in my driveway and I live in the sticks where theft is very minimal.

Rule no. 1 is "No nut to butt" This goes for everything from motorcycles to real life situations.

Rule no. 2 is Take time and pride in yourself and belonings. This includes anti-theft devices, and some less tradtional anri-theft handheld devices.

Rule no 3. is that you don't talk about fight club.

You've been reading about the Honda Day cars I suppose. Basically it's like doing anything else, a bunch of Honda's parked in a parking lot to go watch Honda's racing/showing. It's a theives market place more or less.

At small parking lot style meets obviously this will not happen, however some people do get followed home or have their license plates taken down etc.

The false sense of security you're expressing here is exactly what thieves pray on. You feel safe parking your car in a lot, going inside, telling people about your car, etc etc. because we're all enthusiasts right? Unfortunately there are people who take advantage of that and places like meets are a preferred way for lowlifes to start their research.
What really blows my mind is all the honda owners (or anyone who has a car they care about) that don't have a serious alarm or other deterrant system. That is not something I skimp on with my cars, just not worth it.

Incorrect... you cannot just get a copy of a key made with that little bit of info. Honestly, think about that...

I had my car broken into after a KOP meet so Ill explain. I went to the meet at the Regal in KOP. A kid with a black 99-00 civic was asking about my car and asked me to pop my hood. I figured it was no big deal since I live no where near there. While I was showing him my engine bay he took special notice to my mishimoto rad, and slim fan, and his friend asked if his was still shot. I then proceeded to go to the KOP mall and parked on the second floor of the parking garage right in FRONT of a main entrance door to a store. Like you could see my car from inside. I came outside to find my lip broken off, and my hood poped with antifreeze all over. Opened the hood and saw 2 cut hoses and a missing rad. They broke a window and poped the hood, but didnt take the money that was laying in plain site.

Sad sad day, its a shame they wouldn't pop the hood next time we saw them to prove it wasnt in there, nor did he ever go to that meet again when he said he goes every week.

oh yes you can. ive seen it at dealers ive worked at, which shall remain nameless. ive seen people get keys made with PHOTO COPIES of a pink slip. dont trust anyone. getting hired at a dealership is not like getting hired by the FBI. they usually take anyone. with $50 and a VIN number, im sure someone will make you a key.
