Any Subie Guys got Info on a DogBox Tranny?

Well i searched and didnt see any topics posted on tristate about it, and have been looking online, gotta love google, but want to hear what you subie heads have to say about it?

Although i dont own a suburau im always trying to learn about anything automotive...

basically want to know more about it and the advantages and disadvantages and which would be better for you guys to run, helical or spur gears?

Basically from what i gather it makes it easier to shift at higher rpms without fully engaging the clutch? and mainly built for race applications, however many DD dogbox trannys...

But isnt this basically like a WOT BOX or anti-lag to some sort just mechanical instead of computer operated? Does it just last longer and cause less wear?

How hard is it to drive on a dog box tranny, from what i gather if your not a skilled driver your going to cause more harm then good? Do you just eat through syncros

I just want to hear what subie guys have to say about such a tranny since subie trannys dont last to long under high hp application and with the right driver would this setup with gears of course be benieficial or a waste?

dogboxes dont have synchros. it makes shifting notchier and noisier for normal driving, but as far as racing goes it allows quicker shifts and the gears are also stronger for very high hp applications. its too late and i'm too tired to go into more detail now but thats the one sentence summary. there are a few guys on here with them who i'm sure can explain more about it...

If it's for a DD he should just do a 6 speed.

Period.

yeah a dog box has no purpose on the street, ask Jourdan. Hes managed to break one already.

With a subie, you have three options all depending on the cash you want to dump.

1. Most likely the cheapest, 5 speed RA gearbox

2. a STi 6mt... but it needs alot of stuff to go with it

3. a built 5mt with PPGs or a combo of PPGs, Helicals, and or RA gears. (more favortable to some people because its a little more plug and play than the 6MT.

A dogbox is overkill for a DD. I have PPGs from Andrewtech and couldn't be happier. They were Uber expensive but worth it.

Ra gears arent going to get you much further than a stock set so you only have two options when it comes to upgrading a Subaru tranny.

1) STI 6 Speed
2) PPG Helicals/straight cut. Both hold the same amount of power (some people argue this), straight cuts are louder.

So do more people run helical gears or spur gears, and what holds more power?

Ive heard that it takes a skilled driver to avoid wear on a dogbox tranny, and can actually cause more harm then good if not driven right? Whats the truth to this?

You have to positively engage each gear, if you let it skip over the dogs, you can damage it. Though not a scooby, I have the PPG straight cut set in my high HP DSM and drive it on the street frequently, when I'm home anyhow.

Don't let anyone tell you that you can't downshift, or if you miss a gear you have to come to a complete stop to re-engage any gear, drive it like any other transmixer, just make sure you don't limp wrist it onto gear and you'll be fine. I don't know why, but those are the two primary myths I seem to come across about dogboxes.

You have the ability to no-clutch shift with a dog box too, preload the shifter, activate some type of ignition or fuel cut to momentarily slack the drive train, and pull the next gear like you mean it, it WILL go.

The first time I tried it off the 9750RPM rev limiter 3 things happened. First, there were bad noises, like really bad. Second, the car turned 90* to the left and upon later inspection, actually laid rubber. Third, the pucker factor activated. I drove the car back to the garage, jacked it completely off the ground, and inspected the drivetrain. All was well, though I still haven't mustered up the intestinal fortitude to try it on the track... yet. It is just begging for broken axles and t-cases, I can't wait.

I have about 3500 street miles on it and haven't even found "normal" geartrain wear particles in the oil.

Straight cut such as mine are loud, the helical should be quieter. Helical gears are technically stronger depending on tooth profile since they usually have a tooth and a half in contact, but they impose side loads into the bearings and case, so you may find more wear there. Straight cut only contact 1 tooth at a time, but does not put the side loads into the case.

I would use the exact thing I have again in my specific build, and wouldn't mind DD'ing it, but the whine will eventually drive you crazy. I have 4" turbo back exhaust, and cruising around the gearbox is much much louder than the engine outside the car.

Here's a video of me out cruising around.

http://s85.photobucket.com/albums/k5...rent=Drive.flv

Again, I know this isn't Subaru specific, but I figured it could help.

Yeah, what he said. I have a version 6 RA setup in my RS right now that started making noise about 2 weeks after I put it in. When it gets a little warmer out, I'm gonna pull it out and inspect it.

I was under the impression that straight cuts are different from a dog box.

Straight cut and helical cut are just describing the teeth on the gears. Where as dog box refers to the type of engagement the gears have (syncro or dog).
