If you have slicks you do burn outs to warm them up for better traction. On street tires, it does nothing but hurt you.

Is this for real question? Its to heat up the tires to gain traciton.....For real now?

I think with street tires, the compounds aren't soft enough to really get "sticky" when you spin them, but spinning them can get dirt and other things off, but you don't really need to smoke them, just a few goes around.

sompeople do it with street tires at tracks like atco and stuff to get the water off of them becuase you have to go through the water box.
i personally always warm up my tires, weather im at the track with my slicks, or on the street at a staged race with regualar street tires. in the summer, i can only spin first and second from a dig, in the winter i can spin first second and third, so the extra warmth in the tires means something. so i guess what i mean is people do it to heat the tires, and to clean them of debris like dirt and water. i will say its completely pointless to go through the water box with street tires, it just gets the treads all wet, and most of the time you cant completely dry them. better off just going around if possible. |

I agree with everyone, burnout with slicks, just spin a little with street tires.
I didn't know this for a long while but what I've read is after you go through the water just spin them a little to get off dirt and stuff. Then do your run. |

Doing a burnout before racing was originally just to show off believe it or not. Then they realized that it had the benefits of making a slick sticky, so now it's the norm.
On slicks, you do a burnout until the slicks get traction and pull you forward. On DRs, you do a burnout as long as you feel comfortable, the hotter they are the better they will stick. On street tires, you dust them off with a quick spin and that's about it. I do a full burnout on slicks, and I don't bother with street tires as I'm about to do a 1/8mile burnout anyway. :-P

for street tires doing a burnout longer than just a quick spin to dry them/get pebbles off is bad. If you spin the street tires too much they'll lose traction as the compound is different than slicks/drs and they get greasy/oily.

I thought of something else so I'm bumping this thread.
Where do drag radials come into play? I would think you would want to heat them up similar to a slick since they are such a soft compound. Input?

yes...DR's need heat to get them to optimum temp/softness for a good launch.

usually i go to the track for fun.
doing burnouts is fun, and it's legal there, so....i do nice long burnouts and enjoy myself. my cars are slow anyway. and the probe never had traction regardless.
