If you were handicapped......
Later in the day, another customer comes in. This guy was in his early 30s or so, and was in a wheel chair. As he was wheeling himself around, he picked up an item and placed it on his lap to carry it to the register. I walked over and offered to help him, which he graciously accepted. I then noticed his shirt. It said "Gimpin' ain't easy". So, the question I have is: If you had a major handicap would you become bitter and mean to the world, or would you be like the two guys I met yesterday?

well i think it's hard to answer this. People can say they would joke about it and be light-hearted, but once it really happens to them, they could be bitter. I know handicap people of all ages and they are all pretty cool people, don't feel sorry for themselves or anything like that. My 7 yr old son even has a kid in his CCD class that only has 1 arm, his other arms is amputated above the elbow... and he seems like the happiest kid ever.
If I had a serious handicap, I would honestly probably be depressed at first. I love playing sports and doing physical activities so it would hit me hard. But I am a thankful person and I'd eventually come to terms with it and keep on keepin on.

I'd have to agree. I think at first I would be very depressed..I hope I would get over it though. I know I couldnt take having complete mental abilities and being paralyzed or something. That would drive me insane.
I have dealt with tons of people with handicaps-from physical to mental. I think a person would be much happier coming to terms with the handicap/disability then holding a grudge about it.

I would be like the two people you met, but I wouldn't let the handicap stop me from doing anything.

i've lived my life to this point without any serious disability of any kind so that's what i know. any injury or handicap would be devistating to me and my lifestyle. joking about a recent injury or handicap would NOT be easy for me. but, those people who have had a disability since birth would also only know the world with thier disability. that would make you think that they might develop a sense of humor about their disability just as i would make a joke about my receding hair line for example. it may not be as straight forward as that, but it's something to think about anyway. i can say that i'm glad to see anyone (handicapped or not) making the best of thier own situation. those guys you met seem to be doing just that.

depends for me. if i were born handicapped and didnt know any different then I think it would be much easier to rock a Gimpin' aint easy shirt, which had me rollin btw. If I became handicapped because of an accident or sickness, i'd be pretty pissed and bitter at the world.

if I were blind, I wouldn't really mind too much..
if I were physically disabled, it would suck, but my amazingness would still surpass everyone else's.. if I ever go deaf, I'd commit suicide..

I'm a diabetic, and although I wouldn't classify my condition as a diability, my friends joke that I'm "pancreaqtically disabled." I try to make it into a big joke, whether it be by my screen name, or making jokes about being a pincushion. I know I'm not technically disabled, and I'm not assuming to know what these people go through, but I think I'm on the same wavelength.
Gimpin' ain't easy is too friggin' funny.

The blind guy was in my store again today, and was wearing that same hat that says "THAT BLIND GUY".
Someone I work with said "What if someone gave him the hat as a joke, and the blind guy thinks it's like a Phillies hat or something. He wouldn't be able to tell what it says anyway." Best prank ever, if it's the case.

LOL if that was the case, still funny either way. I'm not handicapped, but I'm hearing impaired, used to wear big ass radar dish hearing aids when I was younger. Used to get made fun of, hated my life for a brief time, but I still got mad bitches so I got over it. Now all I do is make fun of it, all I can do really. Now I have small digital aids, I can hear BETTER than most and most people dont even notice them or that I am hearing impaired.
In short, I've discovered that there is no use being depressed about something you cant change. I feel that a good amount of handicapped people discover this, and a good amount dont and remain depressed. You got one life, live it right?
