i knew someone that had one with close to that mileage and the turbos went and he got rid of it. not to scare you away or anything, but generally they will last forever

ha. they are great. i have one, its TIP.

Quick car, loads of room, heated seats, AWD. chip it and you will have a blast ha

it has 72K miles. and is going strong, i also have the same motor in my S4 and at 107K on stock turbos w/o any noise or signs of problems.

and once they blow just upgrade to KO4s ha.

But generally id say dont get one if you dont have some kind of drivetrain warranty to back it up

I have a 2004 A6. Mine is the 2.7T S-line with the Tiptronic. If you can find an S-line and don't mind the automatic, buy one. They are basically the same suspension, brakes, etc. as the S4, just in a bigger body. Mine has been rock solid and I've had absolutely zero issues....tdmopar hit it right on the button.

Some things to look for:

-At 70k miles, see if the timing belt has been done yet. If not that needs to be done and can be a pricey job. However, not doing it could lead to your motor going boom.

-Turbo failure is a lot less common on the '02+ 2.7T's thanks to revised oil lines and other bits in the motor. However, routine service goes a long way to keeping these cars running in tip top shape. If you can get the service history of the car and the oil changes were done routinely, then you should be good to go.

-Another common issue is drivetrain shimmy often caused by dented rims. The factory rims are rather soft and can dent easily on nasty potholes. It's pretty common on most A6's in that age range. Moving the effected rims to the back helps a lot. I am only saying this as if you drive the car and feel a little shimmy in the wheel at speed, this is most likely the problem.

Modded cars have some other stuff to look for:

-Maintenance is even more critical on a chipped car do to the strain on the turbos. If the car is chipped and doesn't have service records I would skip it.

-If the car is a TIP (automatic) and has either an engine or trans chip, the torque converter may be on it's way out depending on how hard it's been beat on. Check for slipping and shimmies at speed. A good way to check for a trans chip on the automatic is to put the car into manual shift in first gear and accelerate from a stop. The trans should automatically shift between 3k and 4k RPM without you doing anything. This is a fuel economy function from the factory and is often removed by VAGCOM programmers or trans chips.
