Wireless Network Help

Ok..... This little war has been a constant battle since I have moved.

I used to have a USB adapter that worked great, granted at that point in time my router was on the other side of the wall that my computer was.

Since I have moved into the new house, the router is hooked up where the LCD tv is (the complete opposite side of the house my room and computer is...)

I have upgraded to an internal wireless network adapter, and upgraded again to a wider range.

I still have a very poor connection.

Anyone have any insight as to what I may be doing wrong, or what I can do to get this thing working?

-Moving the router is not an option.
-Running Cables is not an option.

Thank you for any help!

Only tip I can give you is to try and install the DDWRT custom firmware onto your router (Google it). I used to have poor connections, and lots of issues that all went away after upgrading to this firmware.

Really your out of luck. The only thing you can do is move either the router or the pc. Would it be possible to run a long usb cable with the usb wireless adapter closer to the router? USB cables arent cheap though.

edit: I checked out the DDWRT stuff. It says you can make a wireless repeater out of a router. You could pickup another router put the DDWRT on it set it as a repeater and put it in the middle of the house between the pc and the other router.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet.

What Wireless are you using? I'll assume not B since it's old, but are you still on 802.11G or N wireless?

N will cost you more money, you will need an N router and an N adapter, but you shouldn't have 1 issue at all. Unless your house is made of solid iron walls ha.

And side note - Vista has nothing to do with it.

Not only that, but it also has a section where you can boost your transmit signal. Its very powerful, and adds a boat load of features to your router.
I used to have poor signal on the factory linksys firmware as well as a lot of crashing issues with the router. They were all solved with the ddwrt firmware.
Now I get great signal anywhere in the house, even in my basement.

Haha It says 5.5mbps...

so i'm assuming its b.

as said in the first post, running cables are not an option, and I'm not allowed to move the router.

Edit: just looked again and it now says 11mbps... it now has 1 bar. lol

also just looked at the router. It is verizon fios... it says nothing about what type of wireless it is.

Are you using a laptop or a desktop? My friend has a Wireless PCI network card and it has poor reception since its behind the computer. I have a PCI adapter as well however my antenna is wired so it sits on my desktop which gets great reception.

you'll need to buy another router, either an N or a G with DDWRT on it and cun that as the gateway.

My internal Adapter has 2 antennas.

It is a desktop.

I'm not buying another router... that is too expensive. I'll just look into buying a booster. I have another internal adapter with rangebooster built in, however it no longer works on my computer. my computer will not detect it in any of the 3 ports..... just that one card though.

Thanks I will try that, too.
Vista uses some crappy power management for wireless ( at least on mine) and under control panel it puts the wireless card as "Maximum power saving" which SUCKS BALLS.
set it to "max performance" and it will help tremendously!
i did a before and after bandwidth test and with cable i got under 1 meg/sec then changed it and got over 4!!!

Where in the control panel is the option to switch? I looked everywhere I could think of to change it and couldn't find it.

and yes $50 is too expensive when repairs plus inspection ran me up $240. I only make $8/hr right now..... and i'm trying to save up money before starting college.
