Mustang Guys - I am Stumped!! Need your help

TST I am fking stumped. My dad has an 87 Mustang GT 5.0L. Now, if this was a Nissan or Honda I would have fixed it in a couple minutes. I dont know anything about this car, let alone want to know.

Anyways.

Car when its cold is fine. After it warms up, it starts almost hiccuping. It wont stop doing it at all and if you floor it the problem becomes worse. I personally remember the car doing it here and there but he says it was when he put the BBK Intake on it.

Car has...
Flowmaster Catback
Edelbrock Headers
ACT Clutch
BBK Intake
Professional Products 75MM TB with EGR Plate.

Dont know why this thing is doing this. Is there a way I can check codes etc?

Is it knocking or anything like that? Has he tried putting the stock intake on to see if it stops? Are all the connections tight, no vacuum leaks? He has a MAP set up, so it can't be anything w/ the MAF. Is it throwing a check engine light? Have you tried running higher octane?

Oh and if it has a check engine light, under the hood, on the driver side, near the back of the engine bay, theres a big and a small plug. Those are what you connect the OBDI reader to.

when you say bbk intake do you mean upper and lower or just the cold air setup? is it still speed density or converted to mass air? does it start hard after its warmed up and shut off? could be a timing problem or the ign module may be on its way out or the distributor could have a problem

take off the BBK throttle body and clean the area around the T/B and the plenum for oil buildup. check to make sure that all bolts are snugged and there are no leaks around the BBK T/B. make sure all wires and all other connections are fastened and where they are suppose to be.

disconnect the battery for up to 20 min and allow the ECU and all the parameters to reset and relearn itself, especially for the T/B itself.

sounds like a vacuum leak causing an fluctuating loop. Check all your hoses. if you can, seafoom is pretty good for finding those leaks, that or if you can get a can or tank of propain, spray that around your hoses. If you come across an area where you spray and the idle evens out, you found your vacuum leak.

if its spurting you might just need to give the old girl a tune up, My 1990 was doing that and a tune up stopped that.

Or a clogged fuel filter, which in return, is considered part of a tune up.

If it started with the intake, that points towards a vacuum leak. If it's just coincidence, I'd maybe do plugs, wires, ect.

if he did upper and lower check ignition timing. there is a plug you have to disconnect to put it in base timing. i ran into alot of problems where people tried to set timing with the plug still attached. other than that theres a slim chance of a vac leak. if it was a vac leak the idle would be super high. mine had the smallest vacuum leak under the upper intake and it was idling close to 2k all the time. also mass air or speed density? i cant remember what year they switched to MAF
