[10 pics] Two photo trips - Critiques welcome

So I spent a lot of time using the camera this weekend. Just got it Saturday morning. Spent much of Saturday and most of Sunday using it.

I read the manual for it cover to cover, and just read a photography book last week. I bought the camera since I teach photojournalism and I this is the camera the students use.

I took an SLR photography class back in high school, but since then nothing.

I mostly played with the Aperature Priority setting trying to use depth of field effectively. I did mess with the ISO for the few indoor shots I took and played with shutter speed a little. I took these with my d40, an 18-55mm kit lense, and a 55-200mm "kit lense." I used a uv filter on the 55-200.

I do like that one too. I really tried to get some good pictures of that memorial, but with people everywhere, even getting that shot was tough. I thought that one would have been better if it was zoomed in more, to kinda make you question, is this a mini-flag or a full size one?

It was a good time though. I walked at least 8-1o miles that day... I'm just glad the weather was nice.

I like them a lot, if I had to critique them I would say try cropping out the front of the minivan and the spray paint on the ground in the very first shot and shots 2 and 3 could use a slight crop to straighten out the slight lean you've got there

I'll have to play with the images to straighten some of them up. I really didn't look at that while shooting. Something I'll consider next time.

I really liked the WW2 gun, but the setting directly around it looked terrible - It was a newly created park with barely planted grass and plants.

I'm still kinda amazed I got that shot to work, but I like it now. I tried framing it through some arch that was near it, but that made it much too busy. Wish I didn't have 56k so I could upload these things I'm talking about...
