d200 vs d90 v d300?

Hey guys,

Right now im shooting with a d50, but I am looking to upgrade. The basic situation is that my parents are looking for a dSLR so I may just sell my d50 kit to them. That brings about my next question. I've been looking into what to upgrade to (want to stay Nikon, for my accessories sake), and have decided on looking at the d200, d90, or d300.

From what I've found, the d200 is very similar to the other two, but performs worse at high iso. The d90 is cheaper than the d300 but lacks weathersealing, and the d200 is generally cheaper than the d90.

What do you guys think I should look into?

The D90 can shoot video also, whilst the D300/D200 can not. The D90 is more geared to entering DSLR users I would think with the D300 and D200 are more of the serious amateurs and pro's.

Personally I know what I would say, D300. Since I already own a D300, it was such an upgrade over my old D50. No matter what you do it will be a nice upgrade from a D50. I even convinced a buddy of mine to upgrade from his D50 to a D200

Good luck with what ever camera you pick.

For your situation I'd probably recommend the D90 to be honest. You're right that its similar in a lot of ways to the D300 and for the avg. hobbyist / amateur I think the D90 would be more beneficial.
I dont think you can really go wrong with any of your options though.

If you do decide to go with a D200 for whatever reason, I would consider selling mine if you're interested. I have a grip and 2 batteries to go with it.

yea, i dont care much for the video ability. The button layouts of the 200 seem to be a bit more convenient vs the 90 as well. The extra 2mp doesnt do much for me either, and after thinking about it, I can't really justify the extra price of the d300 over the d200. The weathersealing on the d200 is also a plus. I was shooting in New Zealand in the pouring rain with my d50 and was scared ****less with everything wrapped in a trash bag haha.

bryan, how many clicks on your body and how much were you looking for? pm me some details

The prosumer line (200, 300) has a bigger, brighter viewfinder, more robust build quality, weather sealing, a higher frame rate, and a better control layout. The D90 has the D300's sensor so is better at high ISO's than the 200. It's also smaller. They all will have excellent image quality and you can't really go wrong. I'd say go for the D200 is you don't care about video and don't do a ton of low-light shooting. Go for the 300 is you want the best of everything, but remember it's going to be outdated by something 'better' in another year, so it's all relative.

yea, the extent of my low light shooting is for bands and whatnot, but usually there is some sort of stage lighting to work with, and with the right glass, I can make due.

I gotta look up the number of releases on it... I'd prefer to sell it with the grip if you're interested in that as well just because I dont know how much work it would be to sell seperately... it is in really good condition all around, I take care of my stuff well.
